What is this display telling me?

I am experiencing a problem with my server that 'seems' to be pointing at a network issue. My 'netstat -i' shows:
Name Mtu Network Address Ipkts Opkts
lan2* 1500 10.1.10.0 10.1.10.102 0 0
lan0 1500 10.0.0.0 dwprod01 57182508 79131582
lo0 4136 127.0.0.0 localhost 3803 3803
.
Can someone tell me what the '*' after lan2 indicates. I cannot find it in the man page. BTW lan2 is not an active connection. The interface card is installed but no cable is connected. We've been using lan0 for 5 years.

Re: What is this display telling me?

If I recall a trailing asterisk usually indicates that the NIC (or rather PPA) isn't up.
As you said, it has no link.

Re: What is this display telling me?

It means that the lan is not UP, although you have an IP address assisgned to it.
Check it with ifconfig lan2

Re: What is this display telling me?

And modulo a subnetmask of at least 255.255.0.0, lan2 and lan0 have been configured into the same IP subnet. This isn't necessarily "bad" but it does not always produce the desired results.
