1.)what unix admins like to do?

I like solving problems...

To be a good admin - not only do you need to be able to recognize problems, but also you need to provide solutions...

2.)what unix admins will suggest to learn to unix beginners?

Training - will help you get the base to be a good admin...

http://www.hp.com/education/sections/hpux.html

Get yourself a good book or 2 - and read

Re: what u will suggest to learn in hp ux? and y?

1) As little as possible because all your work was done in your first year on the job and now all the system monitor and to an extent repair themselves automatically.

2) The best advice I can give you is to study section 2 of the man pages. These are the system calls and they define what UNIX is and is not. When you understand the system calls, you have a great insight into programming whether that be Shell, Perl, C, C++, ... .

1.)what unix admins like to do in unix?
Agreeing with A. Clay. A good Unix system is one that you never have to touch. Takes a while to get them like that. I like doing serviceguard and logical volume work from the command line. Its fun. I like building big patch/application sets two, because it makes me feel smarter than I actually am.

Back to A. Clay's point. When I left my last job, it was on somewhat shorter notice than I'd like, due to an International move I had planned. I graciously offered to help them out on a spot basis while they looked for someone new for my spot. It took them three months to replace me. They never called, because the systems took care of themselves.

2.)what unix admins will suggest to learn to unix beginners?.. and y?..

I would suggest HP-UX Systems Administratioin i and II, from HP Education. I learned a lot from those courses. I like Raqeef Rehman's book HP Certified, I still peek in there for reference. I think that Charles Keenan's book HP-UX CSA is a great high level admin book to read after you have experience.

3.)admins...also reply how many years u r experianced in hpux or any unix...

12 years HP-UX Perhaps a year or two messing with something else before that. A wee bit of IBM 4381 mainframe work(yuck!) . I can't believe its been that long. I used to be so young.

:-)

Good Luck.

1.)what unix admins like to do in unix?

Generally admin is always a critical job. You are the resposible for the machines to handle physical and software errors. You have to be like Real Time person to handle those. ;) They have to monitor and guide the system usage.

2.)what unix admins will suggest to learn to unix beginners?.. and y?..

Start to learn basic commands, system admin commands. To make hard work to smart work then learn shell, perl, awk, sed etc. programming. Keep improve your monitor skills and analysis*

3.)admins...also reply how many years u r experianced in hpux or any unix..?

only 2.5 years..(my IT experience also - smally boy). leart a(ll) through ITRC forums.

Re: what u will suggest to learn in hp ux? and y?

hi,

1.)what unix admins like to do in unix?
Good ones: Strive to provide uninterrupted service to customers

Bad ones: Does not care about downtimes that can occur due to an action they are not sure about.

2.)what unix admins will suggest to learn to unix beginners?.. and y?..
- Read an operating system book (know the basics first)

- Scripting (shell script, perl) - learn to interact with the Operating system for simple tasks.

Above all, don't be in a hurry to learn everything at once. Be patient. Be wise.

3.)admins...also reply how many years u r experianced in hpux or any unix...
*Does this really matter?* I may be a "bad one" ;)

kind regards

Re: what u will suggest to learn in hp ux? and y?

Hi Sekar,

Unix is fun and easy to learn if you have the passion towards unix. I am not a Unix administrator in my day today job, but i know what it is for... I will try to explain your questions from my experience.

1.)what unix admins like to do in unix?
Install, customize and manage servers. Play with Kernel (linux will be fun for playing)

2.)what unix admins will suggest to learn to unix beginners?.. and y?..

To know Unix, work on Unix.... Basic and formost is get your hands dirty.

3.)admins...also reply how many years u r experianced in hpux or any unix...

7 Years in Unix (HP-UX, Solaris), 9 Yrs in Linux, 2 Yrs in AIX

How long it will take to me to become a unix admin...?..

It depends on how much you learn and how many systems you break :-)

Re: what u will suggest to learn in hp ux? and y?

How long is a tough question.
The time period required to become good sys admin depends on:

1. Individuals learning will
2. His tourbleshooting approach
3. Communication skills
4. Setup he gets oppurtunity to work on
5. And the kind of critical setup it is and problems he goes through
6. Initiative he is allowed to take and responsibilities offered in that project.

And probably some more aspects.

Ideally 1 years time on a genuine setup would make that person an able sysadmin.

Re: what u will suggest to learn in hp ux? and y?

Shekar ,

In short just , keep on working on a system (test system). Install many times .., Configure many times , use the commands many times , use the man pages ,and you will be a master in sys admin. You need to know good scripting knowledge also.

Best Regards and Good luck,

Re: what u will suggest to learn in hp ux? and y?

1) what unix admins like to do in unix?

I also am in aggreement with A. Clay and SEP abopve. I prefer to do as little as possible. Once a system is set up properly, with monitoring scripts in place, an asmin should have to do as little as possible directly with the system besides an occaisional password reset (assuming you do not have seperate operators who can accomplish this task).

Of course, the other areas of the Admin task besides the hands on the machine will take up more time, but this falls into the area of "what don't you like to do as an admin". By this I mean the security, Disaster planning/recovery, Compliance issues that have to addressed. And do not forget the management interface work, but don't let me get started on that one....

What I really enjoy doing is setting up and getting a new box configured. I don't do this too often, but starting from scratch and getting the complete system together and running just right is enjoyable to me.

2) what unix admins will suggest to learn to unix beginners?.. and y?..

Well, I got tossed in off the deep end. We purchased our first real computer (HP 9000/320) and I was "the one in charge of getting it working". Your best approach will have to depend on your budget. If you can afford it, look into the HP courses. They do a good job. The other end of the spectrum would be to read the manual pages and research the net for information.

One of the best things you can do, IMO, is to learn how to extract information out of the manual pages. The format can take a lot of getting used to, but the information is there. I used to try to take a day now and then just to read through the, hardcopy, manual to learn new commands. There's a lot of stuff in those pages.

3) How many uears experience?

We got our first HP-UX box, a 9000/320 system, back in 1988, so I guess almost 18 years now.

And now for a suggestion. Get a seperate, low end is okay, system that can be used to experiement with. I understand some of the older boxes caan be found not too expensively on ebay. This is a sandbox system, that is not critical to the end users and if you mess it up, no problem. Install the OS from scratch, install applications, patches, and updates. Add users, delete users. Add disk, configure filesystems. Remove disks. Configure a web server onto it. Deinstall software. Download PD software and install it. In other words, play with it until are comfortable with admin'ing it. Do all of this from SAM(1M). Then go back and do it all again from the command line.

How long it will take you to become a System Admin will totally depend on you. It can take a few years, or it can take a lifetime. This totally depends on your abilities and the effort you put into learning the system.

One last comment: Read the forums. Daily, if not more often. There are also some decent newsgroups on usenet, but the signal-to-noise ratio can be pretty bad there.

Re: what u will suggest to learn in hp ux? and y?

1) I like to know my systems so well that when someone comes with a question or a problem, once they describe it, I can immediately say "This is the what the problem is, and this is how it's fixed." This isn't always the case, and luckily I also like having problems that baffle all logic as to why they are happening, then I figure it out. Problems can run the full gammet of things...

2) Learn what root can do. This would require a sandbox. The reason why is that root is all powerful. You need to be careful when using root, and you need to make sure others are careful when using root.

3) 11 years HPUX. (8 Full time, 2 part time.)

Re: what u will suggest to learn in hp ux? and y?

1) Unix admins like to setup a system and never have to worry about it again :) I like to write user and operators interfaces using Perl when i'm not troubleshooting problems. Also like planning and implementing new system installs.

2)I would suggest the HP System Admin and Performance Tuning courses. This courses will help learn how to setup a system and tune it so you will not have to mess with it again.

3) 13 years working on HPUX and AIX systems.
