In the /var/adm/syslog/sylog.log file

If this is what you mean.

Can I be a bit more pedantic here :)

You'll find the system log in /var/adm/syslog/syslo.log but there are also lots of other useful logs that get stored in the directory above i.e /var/adm/syslog.
Never preceed any demonstration with anything more predictive than "watch this"

Or do you perhaps mean where does HPUX document message meanings? If that's the case, I'd like to know too.

There is no message catalog per se. We get requests for that all the time. Errors can come from too many places (shell, commands, libraries, etc.) So there is no one source to collect all the messages.
