i was just wondering to know which is the most popular and mostly used UNIX system in world amongst HP-UX, AIX, SOLARIS etc etc, and why ?

If you post this question here, everyone will say HP-UX. :)

Decisions for adoption of a particular Operating system for Enterprise use generally relies on a few fundamental requirements in terms of Stability, Robustness and above of Support.

In the recent years, linux (flavours like Redhat, SUSE, Oracle Enterprise linux, etc) has gained much popularity because of Openess, Statability, ease of installation, "support" and vast amount of software available for free use.

It would be interesting to see any recent reports on the popularity of OSes...

Am sure others will post some more intersting facts.

I would say this is an invalid question.
Loke others mentioned you might get quite a lot of people saying different OS, also this has been asked on a HP forum .

continuing to the comment by HGN, i would narrow down my search more. i would like to ask in terms of performance and support. So, now will it be possible to rate the UNIX systems on this criteria at least ..

In terms of support, I rate HP-UX as having the best support and quality control. HP simply does it better than anyone else.

I know have experience with Red Hat and Sun support as well.

Even though on a forum such as this, everyone will have a different opinion. Here is what I say.

For hardware support HP-UX. HP has excellent coverage here.
For software support I would say Solaris. (Even though I hate Solaris)
Firmware, goes back to HP-UX.
And for onsite support I have always found HP to be the best. I deal with several vendors almost continuously, and the HP guys always seem to be the most knowledgable and helpful.

As for prefered use, I was "raised" on HP-UX so of course I say HP-UX, I find it to be the most reliable and safely managed systems. Cheers1

I would defintely go for HP servers with HPUX + LVM , I have worked on atleast 3 other OS availble (Solaris, AIX, RedHat Linux on Intel)I would recommend only HP for their performance and support.

"popular" how? in terms of sales (as implied by "most widely used").

I doubt that you'll ever get an objective answer. You'd need sales and "installed base" figures for the various O/S's. I doubt that any of the vendors have/would release those. My experience is that those kind of numbers are usually closely guarded.

InfoWorld or other such publication may have done a survey, but those results may not be a typical distribution, as it may only reflect the results as they apply to subscribers.

Difficult to answer because it's hard to find decent reliable figures about this, MacOSX might be the most popular Unix, certainly on workstations.

Linux is also popular, but it is not a Unix (well, it looks and smells, but it not Unix certified, MacOSX is).

But probably the winner is the BSD family, Free, Net and OpenBSD combined take a huge piece of the pie.

While I have a natural tendency to say HP-UX, I would probably say that the most widely deployed Unix system is probably one of the embedded Unices, and I would not be surprised if that outnumbered HP-UX, AIX and Solaris combined. Perhaps even those three and OSX combined.
