Why am I swaping to dev when memory is only 70% util on a box with 29gb memory

Henry,

That porcentage 2 and 1% are very low, and they do not mean that you are swapping or paging out, they are just telling you that since the last time you rebooted the server, you needed to use that amount of swap space, but not neccessarily using it right now.

Your system looks totally fine to me, if you want you could check with the vmstat command to see if your machine is paging out at that specific moment, look for the po column at it should be "0" all the way through.

Paging start before the MEM utilization reaches 100%.But i am nots sure at what percentage.

Memory mapped files used by certain applications will use a small amount of the swap space.
