Why can't I use the console?

Funny that ^Ecf did not manage to bump the other write-enabled console you have into read-only mode.
Try connecting to the server over the network (via ssh or telnet) and terminate the processes on the hung console including the getty process for /dev/console (/etc/inittab should restart the getty process on the console).

Max,
what u do is switch off the server . connect to lan console.. and start the server. u will get the error message on the screen.
get that error message
press ^Ecf to go to console mode inthe lan console screen.

What server are you using? If it one of those that give the LCD of the bootup codes, check what boot code did it reach before hanging.
Can you try hooking up a dumb terminal console (or a graphical monitor) to this server?
