The boot code is dependant on the file system type to find everything. In order to boot, it has to be HFS.

Re: Why only hfs is using for /stand

Hi SO,

10.X - 11.0 - 11.11

This is a limitation of the secondary system loader, hpux.

hpux is responsible for loading the kernel from the boot file system and transferring control to it. In order for hpux to load the kernel, it must have knowledge of the disk layout from the file system from which
hpux is booting.

On HP-UX 11i Version 2 (11.23), /stand can be a VERITAS (vxfs) file system.

The new loader is called EFI and has some more flexibility than the old loader and can load different types of Operating Systems and filesystems.

I think Robert-Jan did a pretty good job of explaining it - there's nothing I could add.

Re: Why only hfs is using for /stand

Hi s.o.,

It must be HFS because HFS has fixed block sizes. Since the ISL is reliant on the firmware of the system to "know" how to read the boot loader (LIF) & where to find it, the fixed block size of HFS is a must.
That's about as simple yet detailed as one can put it.
