Will physical CPU/Memory be shared in a VPAR configuration?

Will physical CPU/Memory be shared in a VPAR configuration?

I was told that I/O adapters are dedicated to the server, however, CPU and Memory is shared between different vpars on the same npar.

Is that true?
I thought each vpar will be using it's own physical CPU, Memory and I/O adapters, and CPU or Memory could be dynamically assigned?

Thanks,

Re: Will physical CPU/Memory be shared in a VPAR configuration?

There will be one dedicated CPU for a vPar. CPUs can be dynamically allocated; but to add additional memory you need to reboot.

What is your vPar & OS version?
Dynamic memory allocation is supported only with the latest Vpar version A.5.X ; not supported on HP-UX 11.23

Re: Will physical CPU/Memory be shared in a VPAR configuration?

Depends waht you mean by "shared" - CPU and memory arten't virtualized in any way - for each physical CPU core and each chunk of memory, 1 and only 1 vPar owns that core/memory at any one time - as already pointed out, you can move a core from one vPar to another, and in the latest versions of vPars with 11.31 move memory from one vPar to another, but at any given moment only 1 vPar owns the resources (different fro HPVMs or VMware or IBM SPLPARS weher resources are shared via virtualization)

saludos Hanry,

IO are dedicated always, CPU's can be dedicated or "shared" (floating in our case) and memory, depends on the version of vpars.

Currently resources are not really shared, but likely they will be in future, see vPars v6 here:
