will rp3440 disks work with rp7410?

Hi

I wanted to increase disk space on an rp7410. I powered off the rp7410, inserted 72GB disks into it that came from rp3440's, powered on the rp7410. The rp7410 could see its old disks but not the new ones (the new ones don't show up in ioscan nor in the bootprom menu's "search" command).

Are rp3440 disks incompatible with rp7410? or do I need to upgrade the firmare/drivers on the rp7410? How can I make the rp7410 see the new disks?

thanks
Victor

What type of disks are these ?

diskinfo /dev/rdsk/c?t?d? (e.g. diskinfo /dev/rdsk/c1t6d0) .

Hi Victor,

Make sure the disks are of the same type SE/FW/LVD. You may have a scsi type mismatch. Refere to the label / documentation on the type of hardware supplied and the type of disk drives you are having.

This does not look like a firmware / driver issue.

Hope this helps.

Re: will rp3440 disks work with rp7410?

If the drives involved are the same type, SE/LVD whatever, and they have the same connector type, then they'll probably work. I don't see any firmware issues in my crystal ball.

ioscan -fnC disk and take a look at the model numbers. You may see the model numbers are the same throughout.

Re: will rp3440 disks work with rp7410?

thanks for the replies.

ioscan -fnC disk shows only the old drives therefore I can't do diskinfo on the new ones.

physically the old and new disks have same form factor and connector type. however, the disks have the following labels:

old - 73GB LVD 10K
new - 73GB 320 15K

Re: will rp3440 disks work with rp7410?

Hi,

Looks like the two disk drives are of different types even though they look the same. To get more details check on the part code / model number on the sticker on the disk and then go to seagate / hp site to get more info on the particular disk. I said seagate since a lot of disks are from seagate.

Hope this helps.

Re: will rp3440 disks work with rp7410?

thanks Sanjay.

does it mean that in order for disks to work, they must all be the same type? In other words, if I pull out the old disks and leave the new ones in, then the new ones will be seen by the system?

Rp7410, only upper two slots will work.
To make all four slots to work you must have second cell in the system.

How many cell boards in Rp7410?

Re: will rp3440 disks work with rp7410?

Rp7410, comes with Ultra160 controller. So Ultra3 or Ultra160 should work.
Rp3440 is equiped with Ultra320 controller. That's why you see 320 drives with 3440.

If you mix the drives, the SCSI bus works at the lowest speed of the device in the bus!

I never tried mixing, I feel it should work with reduced speed.

Thanks Thayanidi

how can I tell how many cell boards are in the rp7410?

Re: will rp3440 disks work with rp7410?

Hi,

It seems your system has only one cell and you have inserted new drive in lower hot swap HDD case. Find out the cells in your system by

#ioscan -fnC cell

From my rp7410 system with two cells
#ioscan -fnC cell
Class I H/W Path Driver S/W State H/W Type Description
============================================================
cell 0 0 cell CLAIMED BUS_NEXUS
cell 1 1 cell CLAIMED BUS_NEXUS

If you have only one cell and only one HDD in two of upper slots then try installing this drive in other upper slot.

Re: will rp3440 disks work with rp7410?

thanks for the reply.

ioscan shows 2 cells:

# ioscan -fnC cell
Class I H/W Path Driver S/W State H/W Type Description
============================================================
cell 0 0 cell CLAIMED BUS_NEXUS
cell 1 1 cell CLAIMED BUS_NEXUS

the upper 2 slots contain the old disks, I am trying to put the new disks into the lower 2 slots.

Re: will rp3440 disks work with rp7410?

Hi,

The best test to check functioning of disks & lower two slots in your system will be by removing two disks from upper slots and see if it works in lower slots. If no your lower slots have problems ( May be disconnected internally)

Then try putting two new disks in upper two slots and see if these gets sensed at PDC prompt.

Re: will rp3440 disks work with rp7410?

old disks in the lower slots = can't be seen by the system.

new disks in the upper slots = are seen by the system.

it looks like the lower 2 slots are not active. How do I activate them?

Hi Victor.

So your disks are fine and possible reson is slots not connected internally but I have no idea about internal connections, but as people suggested can you have a look internally for some cnnector to lower slots.

Moreover it is a hrdware issue you can also log a case with your local HP office.

Re: will rp3440 disks work with rp7410?

Hi Victor,

The lower two slots getting SCSI connection from 2nd MP/SCSI board.
Is there any hardware partition inthe system (npar)?
For single partition systems even though if you have two cell boards the second MP/SCSI board is optional. If the second MP/SCSI board is not available in the system then lower slots won't work. You can easily verify this by looking at the back side of the server. MP/SCSI board is located vertically. Make sure you have two MP/SCSI boards.
Contact HP support in case you need to add additional MP/SCSI!

Re: will rp3440 disks work with rp7410?

Hi Victor,

Thayanidhi has pegged it in those last couple posts. Each MP board contains 2 SCSI adapters & the bottom one controls the bottom two drive positions.
I suspect your 7410 was ordered with 2 cells but only one MP board - probably because you weren't planning on hard partitioning the box.
Your only options now are to either:

A) Purchase another MP card. You won't *need* to partition the system but those HD slots won't be available until you do.
B) Purchase a JBOD device like a DS2100 (4 slots) or the larger DS2300 & connect it to an external SCSI connection.
