XSWGR1100 bundle won&t install

Hi,

I?ve made a SD depot on the IUX server containing HP-UX 11.0O Core OS and December?99 ACE bundle. I also added XSWGR1100 June bundle with add_release.

Problem is that when I try to install my workstation (with June bundle selected) the install fails. Ignite reports no errors during the install and it completes successfully, but when I try to launch SAM for example it gives me an error message about an internal error and exits. If I install the system only with the ACE bundle selected it works fine.

Be careful not to mix different types of patch bundles or apps in the same depot. This causes all sorts of problems. Keep them separate in terms of os level and version (eg. Dec99 and Sep2000 in separate depots). Also, when you install there is a procedure to follow, ACE bundle should go on first, by itself, before you install the GR bundle. The manual for workstations specifies to do it this way. Try it, and the separate depots for ACE/GR and OS and you should be fine.

Re: XSWGR1100 bundle won&t install

I have different depots for the bundles and the load order of the bundles are correct (ACE first) but still the installation fails. The only way I have managed to get it work is to manually install the GR bundle after the installation is done. *sigh*.

What is the error message that is reported?

Re: XSWGR1100 bundle won&t install

Here's what it says in the SAM logfile:

Syntax Error: /usr/sam/lib/fal/fal.tm at line 1:^A^ALocation: tm_parse:2495^A
Error Code: 7159

I think the problem is that Ignite doesn't configure the GR filesets
properly.

Its going to be very difficult to track down your problem. Its definitely an internal SAM error, ive searched HP(for your error code) and the solution is to reinstall SAM! (due to a corrupted SAM database). Im not sure how youre going to do that inside your ignite restore procedure. At what point do you get the SAM error ? after ACE, before GR ? Try inserting before you get the error a reinstall of the SAM fileset from a depot and see if that works.

Re: XSWGR1100 bundle won&t install

I?m sure that SAM ain?t the only product that doesn?t work correctly but it?s the
only one I have (so far) stumbled with ..

Let?s get back to basics;

- SD depots are created with add_release
and no problems occured.
- OS+ACE / XSW / Apps are in different
depots and config files are ok.

These are the configurations I?ve tried with IgniteUX:

OS + ACE --> Installation successful, SAM
works but I have to manually
install the XSW bundle after
installation.

OS + XSW --> Installation successful
according to logfile but system
becomes unstable (e.g. SAM
won?t work)

OS + ACE + XSW --> Same as above.

I?ve tried to Ignite B2000 and C3600 workstations.

Re: XSWGR1100 bundle won&t install

The SAM problem could be due to some patches/filesets did not get properly configuerd after the installation. This may also have happen with other products.

Check this with:
swlist -l fileset -a state | grep -i sam

If you see the state "installed" in the right column you will have to configure these filesets using the swconfig command.
You can choose to configure all unconfigured filesets by using a wildcard:
swconfig *

Some filesets does not get configured this way though so you will have to configure them manually:
swconfig

Where fileset is the left column output from the swlist -l fileset -a state command.

Re: XSWGR1100 bundle won&t install

Hmm. Well, youve done a pretty good range of tests and youve proved the bunldes are ok because you can manually install the GR bundle after the OS+ACE and SAM still works fine, so no bad patches in the GR bundle. The problem is with ignite doing all these steps automatically. Have you tried using a different version of ignite ? or a different GR bundle (Sep2000 is out now).

Re: XSWGR1100 bundle won&t install

Just a thought but maybe the following patch has crept into the June patch bundle and may be causing some problems ? It would be the right time frame, being released in May 00 .... do you have PHSS_20014 installed ?

DocId: KBRC00002977

Updated: 7/27/00 9:23:47 AM
PROBLEM
Installing the linker/dld patch [PHSS_20014/PACHRDME/English] on 11.x can cause problems with SAM, X Server or CDE programs, due to an incompatibility
in the new dld with the PROBEW instruction.

RESOLUTION

If you experience problems of this type after installing the
patch, please try removing the [PHSS_20014/PACHRDME/English] patch and retest. The lab is investigating the problem and is actively working on a solution. The
preceeding patch which may be installed is PHSS_19866.

Now been replaced by PHSS_21947.

Re: XSWGR1100 bundle won&t install

I agree with the posts here. Check if SAM shows as anything but configured:
# swlist -l fileset -a state |grep -i system

You want to see something similar to this:
# SystemAdmin
SystemAdmin.OBAM-HELP configured
SystemAdmin.OBAM-RUN configured
SystemAdmin.SAM configured
SystemAdmin.SAM-ENG-A-MAN configured
SystemAdmin.SAM-HELP configured
SystemAdmin.SAM-JPN-E-MAN configured
SystemAdmin.SAM-JPN-S-MAN configured

If you have to reinstall SAM, you would use:
# swinstall -s /cdrom -l fileset SystemAdmin -x reinstall = true
"Downtime is a Crime."

Re: XSWGR1100 bundle won&t install

I (temporarily) solved the problem by making a gz archive of Core OS + ACE to substitute the depot installation and it works fine.
I?m waiting my September support cd in case it would bring a solution to this problem.

Thanks for everybody trying to help me out!
