Re: You know you have got it wrong when:-

You turn the key of the K-server above the console where you did the shutdown and see the logging on the next console stop (this really happened to me) ...

Re: You know you have got it wrong when:-

Your boot display shows a Phoenix BIOS trademark with a 1980s era copyright date.

Along a similar line, Tom:

You re-boot your workstation only to discover the window you were working in was logged into the production server.

And, yes, it really happened - to me.

Re: You know you have got it wrong when:-

After having run shutdown on the server you push the powerbutton and realize it's the wrong box before releasing it and you are alone in the dataroom.....

I have just heard about it.

Paula,

It was right after that that I changed the root prompt to include hostname. It's never happened again (knock on wood).

Or .. (And this is a true story from my MVS/XP days but not by me but a tape monkey).

You press the big red button by the Computer room door and the lift does'nt come ??????

Or ... You have a trolley race around the computer room and find out that the glass doors on the tape units are not toughend.

Or ... You pick up the tray of punch cards you just dropped and now they won't load (Hey showing my age now)

Re: You know you have got it wrong when:-

You hit the power button on the HASS unit & realise they are attached to a server you haven't shutdown yet (and can't shutdown for another 15 minutes as it's the DNS server !)

As for being in the wrong window and shutting down the wrong server, yes, I've done it too. This week in fact.
One place I worked at the CIO did it so we considered that our "Get Out of Jail Free" card. We would all be allowed at least one goof up.

Type in "shutdown -h -y now" then realize you are in a telnet session to a production system running critical apps.

... it was all quiet one night and you realised the next morning that there was a gigantic power failure in the machine room affecting all the servers and that the reason you weren't paged is because your paging server is in the same machine room and it isn't hooked to any UPS.
