dual boot hp-ux and redhat as

I have an rx2600 with RHAS 2.1 installed on one drive. I installed a second drive and want to install hp-ux 11i V2 on it. I followed the 'Cold-installing Instructions' for hp-ux but ran into problems. The system won't boot from the DVD. The system boots into 'MP'. I tried selecting the EFI Shell from the boot menu but I don't see the DVD (no FS1). Is there something in the "MP Admin" level that I am missing?

You must have dvd compatiable media in that DVD to boot off of it.

It might work off the regular HP-UX cd, not sure.

HP-UX is a bit picky, it may want to be on therere first.

Seems however that this is a simple hardware issue. Does the drive have power, is it cabled correctly, can Linux see it if you boot off that?

Things like that.

Re: dual boot hp-ux and redhat as

I do have the HP-UX 11i V2 DVD in the DVD drive. The problem is that I don't 'see' the drive from the EFI shell. 'map' displays fs0, and the 'block' devices but does not display the DVD. I tried using the block device that I thought would be the DVD (IDE drive) but it just doesn't work.
HP-UX was initially installed on this host. Local HP engineer overwrote it with Linux by request from the client. Now the client wants HP-UX re-installed on the second Hard Drive but I can't get anything to load from the DVD drive.

Can you see the second hard drive? It's not
an IDE/ATA hard drive, is it? I'm don't
think the rx2600 supports IDE hard drives,
even though it has an IDE bus.

Yes I can see the hard drives. The CD-ROM works properly from Linux. Its almost like the cdrom was assigned to Linux in firmware.

I'm stumped. You ought to be able to
see all the devices when you're in EFI,
so I would poke around in there or at the
MP level to see if there are I/O
configuration settings you can tinker with.

Me to. I've contacted the HP Eng who did the initial overwrite of HP-UX to see if he has any answers. Thanks for responding.

Re: dual boot hp-ux and redhat as

The DVD should be:

DVD Drive
0/0/2/0.0.0
ACPI(HWP0002,0)/PCI(2:0)/ATA(Primary,Master)

The cdrom should look like this from EFI:

fs1:\EFI> dir
Directory of: fs1:\EFI

09/10/02 12:50p 1,024 .
09/10/02 12:50p 0 ..
09/10/02 12:50p 1,024 HP
09/10/02 12:53p 1,024 BOOT
0 File(s) 0 bytes
4 Dir(s)

You can use the devtree command at the EFI shell prompt to get a list of all the devices on the bus.

The map command might also be useful. You may want to use a serial console or the MP from another system so that you can log exactly what you see.

Re: dual boot hp-ux and redhat as

I found the problem. The DVD drive was at fault. Once it was fixed, HP-UX installed without any problems. Now I have a dual-bootable system. The good thing about this forum is that you confirmed that I had not missed anything in carrying out the cold install.
