hpacucli - how to know which disks are not synced into the logical drive?

Hello again. I use the tool "hpacucli" in Linux (Tao4 - RHEL4 clone) to know which disks have failed on my HP Proliant DL380 using the integrated Smart Array 6i hardware raid.

My question is how do I know which disks have failed and have been replaced, but are not an active part of the logical array yet?

For an example, if I have six disks in RAID1+0, unplug disk 3,4,5 and run only on disk 0,1,2 and then plug in disk 3,4,5 again all the disks the "array-lights" in front of the machine are only lit on 0,1,2. But the hpacucli are reporting that all phsycial disks are ok with "hpacucli ctrl slot=0 pd all show" and "hpacuclu ctrl=0 ld 1 show" report progress on the disk that currently is being resynced into the logical drive. But how can I know what other disks have not been resynced into the logical drive yet?

In summary, I would like the same information from "hpacucli" as I get fron the lights on the front of the machine. How do I get that?

Re: hpacucli - how to know which disks are not synced into the logical drive?

Hi,

It is a hardware question rather than a OS one. As you remove and reinsert the disks back, the LED for newly inserted disks will show them available only when the resyncing is complete.

Same is the case with hpacucli, it shows the disks to be OK as it has not detected any errors on the disks and you need not to replace these. Has it been some real faulty disk, it would have been showing it as failed and you will really require to replace the disk.

Again on the LED part, if for a good disk if it shows LEDs to be normal immediately after insertion and not after resync, there is a possibility that one would try to remove the other three disks, which are actually having the current data.

I hope it is a bit clear now.

Re: hpacucli - how to know which disks are not synced into the logical drive?

Hello Devender and thank you for your reply.

The array-LEDs on my disks dont seem to work the way you describe, they are only lit on the disks that are synced into the logical drive. (As far as I understand - I can take a closer look tomorrow and remove some disks.)

What I still do not undestand is how do I find out which drives are physically ok but NOT synced into the logical drive? I still dont know how to find that information in hpacucli and looking at the front of the machine isnt an option for the machines in server rooms far away.

Sorry, the LEDs work exactly as tou describe. My fault. But I still would like that information some way in hpacucli.
