Installing RedHat Linux on a Compaq Proliant 800

I tried to install Redhat linux 7.3, 8.0 on a Compaq Proliant 800 server and installation hangs when trying to probe for a ps/2 mouse. I updated computer with the latest BIOS version from Compaq ftp site but still the same problem.
I guess i'll have same problem with RedHat 9.0...

Hi,
I'm not sure it may help, but redhat 7.0 worked I did it a few days ago on a Proliant800, wihout changing anything at the bios.
Does your mouse is properly plugged. Try a very simple 2 buttons ps/2 mouse if you have one to check if it works. Or try text installation (without mouse) .

Re: Installing RedHat Linux on a Compaq Proliant 800

You still might want to try Redhat 9.0 though. It ships with a much newer kernel, that might not have this behaviour.

Actually, you should really not want to use a mouse on a server at all, especially a 'not hot pluggable' PS/2 mouse.

By the way... I'm not a real RedHat expert, but can't you simply skip the hardware detection?
It isn't that useful, since the first thing you do after install is wget'ting the newest Linux kernel and compiling one yourself (without modules support ofcourse), which would render the hardware detection during setup useless anyhow..

Good luck :)

You can skip the hardware detection, but I can't remember the command.

If you press F2 at the boot it will give you the boot options. I think you need to use Expert mode to skip the hardware detection.

Odd that the mouse hangs on that, how long have you given it? 5 minutes or more? Sometimes it takes a while to time out. I'd say boot it, go make a sandwich and/or coffee and if it's still hung do the skip hardware.

Re: Installing RedHat Linux on a Compaq Proliant 800

I got the problem with Video Drivers with RedHat 7,7.1,7.2. WHen I installed RedHat 8 on the same computer it worked fine without any additional patch or driver. I know Linux are coming more and more compatible. Try to load new version.

Thanks

Re: Installing RedHat Linux on a Compaq Proliant 800

Well... i tried to install without any mouse, but instalation still hangs when came to mouse detection. I switched my PS/2 mouse with a COM one and it worked, with RedHat 7.3. After that i tried to update the RedHat to version 9 and.... surprize... instalations still hangs when it's about to detect mouse. I guess I'm happy with 7.3 version, the mouse is working fine.

Thanx to all that answered my question.
I'm not a Linux expert but i guess that installation without hardware detection it's pointless.
