LDAP configuration in Red hat enterprise ES release3

after configuring slapd.conf whenver i am trying to start the ldap service
like service ldap start
it shows the following error
configuration file succedded [ok]
service slapd [failed]

please suggest

What do you get in /var/log/messages? You can try starting slapd daemon manually in foreground to identify the problem.

I strongly suggest you to use Fedora Directory Server instead of openLDAP servers.
