Oracle9i IAS and RHAS

I understand that Oracle9i IAS only runs on Red Hat Advanced Server 2.x. But will there be performance issues if it's on a 32-bit intel chip? ie ProLiant DL380.

Hi,

Your performance probably won't be bad. The 32-bit chip will limit how much shared memory you can address for your SGA.

Re: Oracle9i IAS and RHAS

I do not believe that statement is true.

I have information from Oracle that Oracle 9i 1.0.2 will run on Red Hat 7.X boxes.

You need to do a complex java install yourself and make kernel changes which isn't really fun but it is quite possible to run it on something other than Advanced Server.

Advanced Server however is a good idea because the product support life cycle is 18 months versus six months for a regular free Red Hat release.

I've dabbled with Oracle on Red Hat with version 6.2 and 7.3. I have found the product to be reliable, the performance not very snappy.

Where Oracle really shines is when you used Advanced Server to cluster a few computers. Then you get the advantage of multiple processors and more memory.

Re: Oracle9i IAS and RHAS

Especially on itanium2 chip, I would expect the performance uncomparable to a 32-bit system. But for now, this system will be a standalone web server hosting open-source protocols only, calling data from an HP-UX oracle server inside the firewall. So basically I am only concerned with the Oracle 9i IAS. So the bandwidth would be the critical issue.

Re: Oracle9i IAS and RHAS

With a 100 BaseT Lan card running full duplex, you will not have any bandwidth problems at all.

You will probably be running the CPU pretty hot.

Make sure the server has lots and lots of memory.

Re: Oracle9i IAS and RHAS

Thanks. This server is configured with as much as it will take. 2 cpus (xeon) & 3.5GB(don't ask) of RAM.
Another problem has just popped up. The vendor tells me that Red Hat Advanced Server 2.1 is an overkill for this current system, I should be installing Red Hat Enterprise Server. Oracle 9i Internet Application Server still run on this version without having to rebuild the kernel umpteen times? Anyone have experience running 32-bit Oracle 9i IAS on RHES?

Re: Oracle9i IAS and RHAS

Red Hat Advanced Server is not too much for that system.

Its got Lots of RAM and two processors. With a multi processor kernel it will FLY. Seriously.

I'm running a web hosting business with tons of cgi code on it on a much less powerful box with only one procesor.

You'll be fine. Sounds like somebody wants to sell you some hardware.

Re: Oracle9i IAS and RHAS

I should have consolidated these last two posts. I encourage you to zero point one or the other.

We are running Oracle 8.1.7.0.0 ias 1.0.2.2 Patch Level 12 on a PA-RISC box with one processor and 1 GB of memory.

It ran a development environment with 10 developers and 20 test users without any problems at all. Better processor architecture to be sure, but a lot less memory and only one processor.

You should be able to run ANY current Linux distribution you want on that server.
