this could also be an endless dicussion unless you ask for some specifics.
man yum
updates linux software from defined repositories. a repository could be hosted on another server, such as RedHats' RHN, or defined as a local directory.
type yum by itself for common options.
e.g.
yum update (update any/all packages available from default/configured repositories )
yum list ( list all packages identifying installed and those available from repository)
