what is yum update in linux and how to use it.

specifics depend on your distro..
this could also be an endless dicussion unless you ask for some specifics.

man yum

updates linux software from defined repositories. a repository could be hosted on another server, such as RedHats' RHN, or defined as a local directory.

type yum by itself for common options.

e.g.

yum update (update any/all packages available from default/configured repositories )

yum list ( list all packages identifying installed and those available from repository)

yum check-update (list all packages available for your system from configured repository)
