RELAYING -- plz help

Dear Gurus

whats RELAY/RELAYING means ?

i m running a mail server, say smtp.abc.com, for abc.com domain. If a user whose account/mailBox exist on the mail server(smtp.abc.com), mails to user@xyz.com, smtp.abc.com server will pass/forward the mail to the mail server responsibile for xyz.com domain, say smtp.xyz.com...

Should i say that smtp.abc.com has "relayed" the mail to the appropiate mail server i.e in this case smtp.xyz.com???

Regards
Maaz

Re: RELAYING -- plz help

Basically, RELAY is the process of accepting a mail message to be sent to a destination address.

No - better to say smtp.abc.com has forwarded to the appropiate server...

relaying is where you allow your server to be a relay for another domain...

IE: say you want to host multiple domains...then, in the access db file, (/etc/mail/access is the file to edit - then makemap it) you would list all the domains that you want ot relay for:

abc.com RELAY
