RX4640 w/Linux AS 3.0
I now have my rx4640 running Linux AS 3.0 up and running with the HBA controller installed. I need to configure and implement the MSA1500 to be presented to the host. I would like to know how to do this and what are some best practices?
Thank you in advance.

Re: RX4640 w/Linux AS 3.0
I have never worked with msa device but I think that first you have to configure the msa.
You have also to see if the hba module (driver) is been loaded (lsmod).
Did you read the installation guide ?
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c00149689/c00149689.pdf
There's a section for linux.
Hope it helps.

Re: RX4640 w/Linux AS 3.0
To configure the MSA, you have 2 options:
... 1) use CLI (Command-Line Interface) via serial connection
... 2) use the GUI ("ACU" = Array Configuration Utility) which requires a fibre-channel connection
The first option, being "out-of-band", allows you to configure the MSA from *any* device with serial connection (terminal, laptop with Hyperterm(e.g.), your Linux server, yada yada).
The second option, being "in-band", requires the ACU CD *and* a 32-bit computer *also* FibreChannel-connected to the MSA (which means also a FibreChannel HBA). You should have received the ACU CD with your Array (version 7.xxx).
*However*, the ACU CD is limited as to what it can run on. There is *no* version for Itanium Linux. Thus, to use it, you will need a Windows server connected to the MSA SAN, as well.
The latest stuff can be downloaded from:
(( the HP site can be very difficult to navigate.
))
... www.hp.com
... --> storage
... --> Entry-level
... --> HP StorageWorks Modular Smart Array 1500 cs
(http://h18006.www1.hp.com/products/storageworks/msa1500cs/index.html
)
from there:
. for manuals
... --> Technical documentation (on the right side)
. for firmware
... --> Software, firmware & drivers (on the right side)
... --> download drivers and software (on the left side)
... --> HP StorageWorks Modular Smart Array 1500 cs
From here, you have a little issue. If you don't have a 32-bit Windows server *also* connected to the MSA SAN, then you are limited, because only Firmware update is available for Itanium Linux.
With no Windows server, you would use the firmware updater directly on the Itanium Linux box, itself; from:
... --> Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 (Itanium)
The latest ACU CD, 7.01-01, (only runs on 32-bit box, but is nice to have no matter what) can be downloaded from
... --> Microsoft Windows 2000
To get the latest version of just 32-bit *ACU* (not the full ACU CD, which also has HBA drivers for your 32-bit box, etc.), you need to start from the beginning
... www.hp.com
... --> storage
... --> Storage software
... --> HP Array Configuration Utility XE (for MSA)
... --> Download ACU
... --> revision history
... --> version 7.17.1.0
Note that the ACU CD is also bootable (but only on 32-bit box) and actually boots into Linux and gives you the ACU interface, so you would not have to actually install ACU on the box -- but you would *still* need a FC HBA in it. I believe that you can use the one from your rx4640, if necessary, but I haven't tested it.
In any case, *without* a 32-bit server connected to the SAN, you will have to use the serial CLI method.
