Server Migration

I have a Debian server that have installed some package , some program / system are running on it , I would like to migrate it a another RH Server , can advise what is the best way to do the migration to make sure everything would be the same as the old one ? thx

Hi ivyw,

you have to audit the server to know what it is used for.

Here is few steps I would do to migrate a server to another.

- list all the software that have to migrate

- check the versions to ensure there should not be syntax issue from one version to another one (for example from application X version 2.5 to application X version 3.1)

- try to copy the old configuration file and start the application if it looks okay, try testing yourself and ask some other persons to test it too. If copying the configuration file does not work, bad luck you will have to look at the syntax and correct when necessary.

- when all is set do some more testing and migrate users to the new servers (depending on the application you can try all at once or moving them in time)

- Last thing would be to shutdown the old server a week or so after the migration is done and see if someone is complaining (be sure you sent notification to everyone about the new server)


Thats about it, in my case it worked out well when I had to migrate 4 servers to newer one.

Also take care about IP addressing shutdown old server before configure new one with same IP address. Trace routing tables and any IPTABLES record.
