SuSE 9.0 any point trying to make D-Link DWL-122 USB WLAN adapter work?

Hi folks,

I have SuSE 9.0. I found no entry for the D-Link DWL-122 USB WLAN/Wi-Fi adapter from Yast.

Any guess if there's any point for me to try and make it work?

Or should I delete my SuSE 9.0 installation and make a fresh SuSE 9.3 installation? According to the SuSE hardware database the DWL-122 should work with SuSE 9.3.

Any comments would be very welcome and points will be awarded.

Thats the building blocks up there.

You have to install madwifi software which includes a kernel patch to get the hardware working properly.

Ignore the Hebrew in the title, google just assumes because I'm sitting in Israel I need Hebrew to figure out what the page is about.

However the pointer does mention in its title only cardbus, pci and mini pci. Do you think (or know) that this software will work for my USB device also?

I upgraded to Suse 9.3 anyway, which did not recognize the device.

After some googling I found that the linux-wlan(-ng) project mentions the D-Link DWL-122 and that it should work, so I will need to compile the driver and install it. D-Link doesn't want to say the product is supported and the Suse website mentions status "Unknown" for it but I won't let that deter me for now.

If it is still not working on SuSE 9.3 then take a look at ndiswrapper. This tool wraps your Windo$ driver so you can use it in Linux.

But it's even included in the SuSE ditro so just search for the package in Yast.

I did see the ndiswan wrapper when googling but did not notice that it is even included in the SuSE 9.3 distro!

Hi folks,

Some news:

I made a start yesterday: I wanted to compile the linux-wlan code, then I saw that I needed to have the kernel source code for that and didn't know where it was...

So I decided to give the ndiswrapper a go: installed the package from the SuSE 9.3 CD. Result: SuSE no longer booting up KDE, got some strange kernel message in a little window at the bottom left of my display and when I logged in, SuSE started only twm for me. Anyway I continued and got to the point where iwconfig told me the SSID of my access point, even though my access point does not broadcast it (!) and also the WEP password of my access point (!!). Some secure network, huh?

I did some more poking around, searched for "prism2" in my filesystem and found out that SuSE 9.3 comes out of the box with 3 alternatives to get a Prism2 chipset WLAN device running. At this point I decided to completely reinstall SuSE 9.3.

Now I can see in /var/log/messages that SuSE has loaded prism2_usb.o for me, looks successful but iwconfig doesn't show anything.

Anyone have an idea how to get the link from the successfully loaded prism2_usb.o driver to iwconfig actually showing me what I want to see? I guess I don't need sit0 in iwconfig, do I?

Any hints and tips would be hugely appreciated!

Hi folks,

After three weeks (i.e. a week or two ago) with quite a bit of twiddling, asking quite a few questions and prayer I made it!

For now I'm using the linux-wlan-ng driver that is already included and was loaded automatically at SuSE 9.3 installation time.

I modified the SuSE hotplug/net/50 something or other script to call the linux-wlan-ng control utility and in the end successfully convinced the SuSE networking stack to associate the dhcpcd with interface wlan0.

The speed seems to be limited to 2MBits (which is my DSL speed anyway). Maybe this is because the DWL-122 only supports USB 1.1? If I got this right linux-wlan-ng actually goes right up to 11MBits?
