undeleting ext3 files

hi

I have Debian Sarge installed on ext3

by mistake I've deleted some important files

how I know, ext3 data structures do not support any method of undeleting

do I have any chances to get back these files ?

which linux system should have possibility of undeleting ?

I'd like to setup a new Debian Server using a system
with the possibility of undeleting.

kind regards
chris

Re: undeleting ext3 files

I've deleted only TEXT files

I've heard there is a possibility using grep, but knows someone how it works ?

Re: undeleting ext3 files

Chris,

I think you need to add a third party product to your server to allow for this.

Assuming there has not been disk activity you should be able to recover the file data with dd commands.

If there has been significant disk activity on the filesystem involved, you are probably out of luck.

Re: undeleting ext3 files

some months ago I was able to recover some deleted files from an ext3 filesystem using Midnight Commander (mc). It is installed by default by most distributions.

mc has an item in the 'Command' menu called 'Undelete files (ext2fs only)'. It works on ext3, too.

I think it could help you.
