some software has -ng on the end,
for example there is aircrack & aircrack-ng

Different kernel modules for the same job. Perhaps one or the other is better for certain cards. I've not been able to discern more from the links above.

Usually "-ng" means Next Generation.

If a "-ng" is used instead of increasing the major version number (like from 1.42 to 2.0), it often means the old version had some fundamental problem in its design and the new one was redesigned and re-implemented from scratch.

For a while, the -ng version may actually have _less_ functionality than the old one, but this is supposed to be a temporary situation.

From the madwifi.org web page:

"When madwifi.org was launched (sometime in the Fall of 2005) we switched to a new codebase submitted by Atheros. This new code offers advanced features, including, but not limited to, a new HAL, support for virtual APs and WDS.

Note: June 2006, "madwifi-old" has been deprecated, it is no longer supported. All users are encouraged to use an official release tarball, which contains a stable snapshot of svn trunk."

The "new codebase" was originally designated as "madwifi-ng". After June 2006, the old codebase (madwifi without -ng) was renamed to madwifi-old, and madwifi-ng became the new standard version.
