HP recovery disks

I need to run the hp recovery disks because my desktop won't start up. I was instructed to unplug external devices and remove any added internal devices. My question is, about a year ago my husband installed a new graphics video card. Does that need to be removed before the recovery disks to? If so, what is the procedure? Also, how long does it take for the recovery disks to run once you start the process?
