Mcafee vs. Trend Micro

hi

We should buy a new high-performance and good virus scanner for our company.
We'll setup 100, mostly WIN2008 R2 server, Exchange 2010 and ca. 450 Windows7 clients.
All server are virtualized on ESX and clients use VMware View 4.
We should decide if Mcafee or Trend Micro.
I have looked already:

http://www.av-comparatives.org

but

"Please note that AV-Comparatives tests only Home User Products with detection rates over 85%."

Re: Mcafee vs. Trend Micro

hi,

we are using, Trendmicro products on the server platform without problem.

on the desktops we are running Symantec ( endpoint protection + antivirus )

whith the McAffee i don't have any experinece, but in this case i would check also the NOD products form ESET company.

more at : www.nod32.com or www.eset.com

Re: Mcafee vs. Trend Micro

Just to add a little to Michal Kapalka post, we have:

10 servers (Win 2003/2008)
~150 clients (XP, Vista, 7)

All working fine on Trendmicro. It also gives you some side benefits like MSI build, Good scripting engine and some other goods.

Mostly quite happy with it.

Hi Chris,

Thats a good source for comparison of various antivirus software.

Other interesting links for antivirus comprasion -
http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com/in/
http://www.pcworld.com/article/124475/top_antivirus_software.html
http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/collection/1986/top_paid_antivirus_2010.html

Also, antivirus is not enough to protect your system, you also need to protect
your system against the following -
1) Malware -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malware
2) Adware -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adware
3) Spyware -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spyware

If your antivirus provides protection against these then its ok or else you need to
install seperate software for protection against Malware/Adware/Spyware attack.

Recommendations -
* Malwarebytes : For Malware detection
-> http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

* Spybot : For Spyware/Adware/Malware detection
-> http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

Hope this helps.

Re: Mcafee vs. Trend Micro

Hi Chris,

Thats a interesting link that you have found.

My suggestion would be to do research, by visiting a lot of sites that compare
various antivirus solutions. From all these, find out the average rating of
various antivirus solution and choose the one that has both
- the highest rating AND
- provides all the feautres that you are looking for.

For example, if there are multiple sites that say Mcafee is better then go for it as
long as it provides the features you are looking for.

Re: Mcafee vs. Trend Micro

Hi Chris,

One other approach would be to select 2 or 3 good antivirus solution based on
ratings and the features they provide. Then look for shareware/freeware
versions of each of them, install them on your system and use it for a week or
so and check their feature/performance.

After this, you can settle on the antivirus solution that best suits your environment.

Hope this helps.
