Hi Karen,

You have to go step by step by step......

Advise is use the AWD options of VMSINSTALL to speed up the upgrades:

Example:

@SYS$UPDATE:VMSINSTAL A1050 disk:[A1051.KIT] OPTIONS AWD=disk:[INSTAL]

Where disk is device where OA$LIB points to.

This results in $RENAME instead of COPY/DELETE when moving
all files).

Do you know where I can find what the longterm support plans are for this product. Is there another product in the pipeline to replace it ?

The future path according to

is CommuniGate Pro from CommuniGate Systems.

There are links to further information on the above site.

As an addendum to my last query, does anybody know where I can find what year versions 5 and 6 were on the Software Product libraries which the customer has ?

HI Bill,

Thanks for this. I just found it before you replied !
I have told the customer but I am not sure if they will have a username and password but at least they know where they can download the software.

Use the magic condist listing seach web site

http://de.openvms.org/spl.php?product_name=Office+Server&platform=OpenVMS+AXP&condist_id=&sortby=0

to get a listing of which CDs contains Office Server

Re: Compaq Office server v4.0a upgrade path to 6.1 - what is the easiest route to do this

Hi Jan,

Thanks for all your help. I have updated the responses and now have been giving rankings.
Sorry for my ignorance !
Another thing is that I found a software product listing for 2004 that the customer could use to upgrade office server as, for some reason, they have stopped getting these BUT I thought OpenVMS V7.3-2 was also on these CDs and they are not !
I now realise that the OPENVms operating system comes on separate CDs now. Can this be downloaded ?

Many Thanks,

Karen

Karen,
are you asking if OpenVMS can be downloaded or Office Server can be downloaded?

Re: Compaq Office server v4.0a upgrade path to 6.1 - what is the easiest route to do this

HI Ian,

I'm asking if OpenVMS V7.3-2 updgrade can be downloaded. The customer has already upgraded to Office server V6.1 and needs support on this as it is running slow but to do this he needs to upgrade from OpenVMS v7.3-1 to v7.3-1 which doesn't seem to be on the Layered product CDs.

Many Thanks,

Karen

OpenVMS v7.3-2 installation CDs are not available for download. HP may sell you the media.

You can get unofficial help in this forum for your performance problems although they can be difficult to diagnose in a online forum. It may be more cost effective to pay for some temporary help. There are people in the UK who can do this.

Re: Compaq Office server v4.0a upgrade path to 6.1 - what is the easiest route to do this

Hi Ian,

Thanks for this advice, I'll speak to the sales guy here about getting 7.3-2 on CD for them.
I will say to the customer about help with the office server problem and how he might have to pay for it.
Here is the email I received from him with the problems he is experiencing with Office server 6.1 and OpenVMS 7.3-1 . If anybody has any ideas as to what he can try in teh meantime that would be good.

"During quieter periods â first thing in the morning, lunchtime, at the end of the working day and even when there are a number of staff logged onto the system (up to and over 100 concurrent users), the performance is very fast. In fact we have had complements from staff that it appears to be even faster now. The key function to test at these times is to run a search within the system against a non-key field such as Surname or Address and responses can be as quick as 3-5 seconds.
During busier periods when concurrent system usage reaches 140/150 users the same search suddenly takes over 20 minutes to do??? At this time there is no evidence that the system is under any real pressure â CPU is low and memory usage, Swapping and Paging all look okay. The RMS files that sit behind the system have been analysed using the â anal/rms/fdlâ command and all of the main data files have been rebuilt using the â convert/fdlâ command.

Over the last 2/3 weeks we have run Autogen so many times but none of the recommended changes we have implemented as a result of this process seem to make any difference.

During the upgrade of Office Server you are asked to enter the maximum number of concurrent users on the system, (which we have always set to 175), so that the installation can be optimized for performance "

Would anybody have an idea as to any parameter which they might have overlooked and that they should check ?

Thanks,

Karen

Re: Compaq Office server v4.0a upgrade path to 6.1 - what is the easiest route to do this

Hi Karen,

if memory serves me right (and it has been some years since I had to use this product), the optimisation included setting global buffers on a number of the key system files.

Back then, the install did a set file/glob=x where x was the number of users in your answer.

You might try to isolate any "hot files" on the system.

The performance may be related to file caching. During quiet periods read-only access may be quickly satisfied from cache, but the later presence of write/update users may cause the file to be droppped from the XFC cache.

I would suggest that you SET FILE/STAT on the main applicaions file(s) and use MONITOR/RMS/IT=(OP,CA) during a busy period.

Duncan
