DS25 boot cd problem

Hi,

I use my laptop and Hyper terminal utility as a console terminal and try to install the OpenVMS to a new DS25 box. I can get the console prompt and can do any console commands. When I use the INIT command, it doesn't display any messages. I wait 10 minutes the command prompt display again. I also boot the system from cd, but it stops at the bootstap line and the installation menu doesn't come up. I don't know why? We have 3 new DS25 boxes and I try all with the same respond. Does anybody know why? Or I must use the VT terminal as a console or graphic termianl as console?

Re: DS25 boot cd problem

Looks like your console is set to graphics.
Do the following:
>>> SET CONSOLE SERIAL
>>> INIT
After that you will see everything on serial port because it will be console then.
In vino veritas, in VMS cluster

Re: DS25 boot cd problem

Hi Desmond

Check the Variable CONSOLE or CONSOLE_MODE (not sure which one is right) in console mode.
It must be set to SERIAL to use the Com port as a console.

This should help

Re: DS25 boot cd problem

Thank everybody who reply to my question. I use KVM and solve the problem now.

Re: DS25 boot cd problem

Hyperterm as delivered with Windows is, IMHO, the worst choice as a terminal emulator to VMS systems. If you can (want) to spent some money, do yourself a favour and uy a descent one - there are several good alternatives in the market: Powerterm, Reflexion, Keaterm, Exceed.... HypertermPro - the'non-free version - might do as well but I've had some trouble with that as well.
If you cannot or don't want to afford any money, download Putty from the Internet.

A KVM might be a solution but would not be my choice for a number of reasons. AFAIK it can limit your access to the system (but since I have no experienece on any DS in this matter, it might just work)
