Re: Hats, crowns and other attributes

Hats, crowns and other attributes

Jan, and all others on this forum.

This morning, when I opened the forum, 6 of the 7 first topics were about someone obtaining or changing a hat.

An important reason for many people to move from comp.os.vms to itrc is the alleged amount of spam and other OT content on comp.os.vms.

With all due respect, but don't let this happen here!

Please note: I am not going to assign points to any response to this message!

Regards,

Bart Zorn

Re: Hats, crowns and other attributes

I see this as some kind of social event. Can't really be compared with the whining, bashing and OT in comp.os.vms.

Bart, you may be right.
But I agree with Uwe. VMS people allways were something different and their connections were stronger. And we all love VMS very much.

Re: Hats, crowns and other attributes

There is not normally such a flurry of these.

I participate in several forums/notes conferences/newsgroups and each has its own character and good and bad attributes.

Re: Hats, crowns and other attributes

Bart,

every once in a while someone gets promoted.
Sometimes I am the first to note the change, and open a congrats thread.
More often however, I use the weekly stats by Merijn (Procura) and check for VMS promovendi.
That yesterday there were THAT many is pure coincidence, but I thought the flood in itself was no reason to withhold them the congrats.
Actually, to the contrary. This is a REAL symptom of a blossoming forum!

So, I really hope I did not irritate you too much, but when I did, I will have to apologise in advance, because I (and I know some others as well) plan to continue doing so!

No hard feelings, I sincerely hope!

Re: Hats, crowns and other attributes

fwiw, I also thought it 'too much already' this morning.

I thought exactly the same thing as Bart.... It's starting to look like comp.os.vms as far as signal to noise ratio on the day overview.
I know that the contents of the nooise is far more pleasant here than on c.o.v. but still.

The promotion to Wizard is perhaps the first one to call out in public.

I thought I saw some usage hints on the suggesting not to call out the pro level promotions.

fwiw,

Re: Hats, crowns and other attributes

The guidelines indicate doing congrats threads for Wizard and up only. Previously we have not dont this, parhaps because we are newer than long established places such as the hpux forum but parhaps we should start.

Re: Hats, crowns and other attributes

Bart,

Congratulating our forum members is very important as it makes that particular members to do more contributions to our forums. Also getting recognitions/congratulations especially from VMS gurus from all over the world gives really a great feeling and honor. Our forum discussion is not like any other internet forum in the net, it really helps solve our members lots of day to day work problems. So no need to worry and not necessary to compare this forum with other forum..

See this thread how it ends...., it is one of the great thread I ever come across....

http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=882716

We did not have this kind of discussions and openess earlier, this is also one of the reason why this great Ist Virtual OS still behind other OS.

Please appreciate our forum members contributions to other VMS users/forum memebrs throughout the world.

When I get first hat, and congratulations from our VMS gurus, I got great happiness than any other appreciations which I got throughout my career. I guess others too may get the same type of feelings. So let them get their due for their great contributions.

Note: If Mr Jan decides not to add any points for 'congratulations related posts', that is well and fine.

Thanks Bart, no hard feeling.

Re: Hats, crowns and other attributes

Hi Bart,
partially I think you are right,
partially I think you are not.

You're a pure VMS guy too, I would have expected such demands from other threads internals so I'm wondering.

I personally do not use ITRC on a daily base (sometimes not on a weekly one), it's useful for me to get information, often I do not add any of my proposed answers because others have given the same hints or solutions already.

If I do have a serious problem I make a call at HP at first because my company is paying for this. This is based on something called service contract.

If you do not have this and you do want to have support by other VMS fanatics on the
base "paying nothing, except a few ITRC points" you should also respect the behaviour of this area. There is nothing in the world which is for free (all other statements are lies from my point of view).

Cheers,
EW

Re: Hats, crowns and other attributes

Hi Ian,
i.e. congratz only for the "rich" ;-)
I do not want to invest time for a search, you do have the information, please tell where "The guidelines indicate doing congrats threads for Wizard and up only." can be found.

Cheers,

Re: Hats, crowns and other attributes

Guys, how about a compromise?

If you're getting a weekly report noting had changes, why not post a single note, once a week, noting all the people who've gained the next level? That way you keep the noise level down to a reasonable level, but still recognise the achievement.

I'd also be in favour of immediately closing the note. I find the practice of granting points to anyone tacking a "me too" rather silly.

Re: Hats, crowns and other attributes

Bart,
I'm slightly agree with you.
In my mind we can celebrate just from graduate. VMS group here is still growing so celebrating pro hat it may produce too many no-technical threads.

Re: Hats, crowns and other attributes

All,

Thanks for your thoughts!

I for my self do not really care for the system of points and graduations, but I can live with it.

But then again, the amount of rubbish in comp.os.vms has not chased me away either.

Back to OpenVMS!

Re: Hats, crowns and other attributes

How about opening a single thread, adding people as they get promoted?

You could even close it immediately, since people can still add to it...

Re: Hats, crowns and other attributes

Well,

It was already suggested several times (in Forums Issues and in the monthly HPUX forums issues streams) that each forum get a new Category "Congrats & other non-technical topics".

Maybe this stream can be considered as an extra vote for that idea?

Re: Hats, crowns and other attributes

The problem is not the immediate congratulations as the promotions happens.

I think what 'ticked me off' was a combination of several new promotions and some participant adding 'me too' onto congrats threads which were months old.

The result was a screen full of just congrats.

I think that the right compromise is to LOCK the congrats threads after some predefined period. At least 24 hours, at most 1 week.

Re: Hats, crowns and other attributes

Hein,

I think one week is too short, I usually close after 3 weeks.
(I too do sometimes have holidays, and this year hospital time as well.

I have however already played with the idea that just a 'me too' should be rewarded lower than a well-considered personal note.
You just triggered me to implementing that from now on for the foreseeable future!
