How do I tell when a licence expired?

Hello,

I'm fairly new to VMS system management. One of our servers gave the following message a couple weeks ago:

%LICENSE-E-TERM, DLBPLUS DLBPLUS-TTI License has terminated

　
I think this may be the cause of issues the server has been having lately (extremely high CPU utilization slowing everything down considerably). I would like to know when this licence expired, but am not sure how to do this.

Issue the following command -
$SHOW LICENSE

This command will list all the active license in your system.
In the output, you would find the product name and also the termination
date for its license.

>> %LICENSE-E-TERM, DLBPLUS DLBPLUS-TTI License has terminated
In your case you need to check the termination date for the products DLBPLUS
& DLBPLUS-TTI.

In case the license is expired then the next step would be to acquire new set
of licenses.

Looks like a typo. It should rather be $SHOW LICENSE

Hi Blake,

Also, to make it even more clear
If the current system time is greater than the license termination date of a
product then it would mean that the license for that product has terminated.

Execute the following steps -
* Get the product license installed and its termination date
$SHOW LICENSE

* Get current system time
$ SHOW TIME

Compare the above time values.
If current system time is greater than the product license termination
date then the product's license has terminated.

Neither DLBPLUS nor DLBPLUS-TTI comes up in the list when I do a SHOW LICENSE.

Hi Blake,

Try the following command -
$LIC LIST *
and then try to locate those licenses.

$ SHOW LICENSE
-> Displays information from the license database in memory
$ LIC LIST *
-> Displays information from the license database in disk

If a license has terminated, it probably did not load at system startup (and the message was from startup ?).

To see the license in the database, do a
$ license list/full DLBPLUS*

If the license is not in the standard database (usually sys$system:LMF$LICENSE.LDB), then search the system disk for other license (*.LDB) databases.

To list the specific license for DLBPLUS & DLBPLUS-TTI
$ LIC LIST DLBPLUS /FULL
$ LIC LIST DLBPLUS-TTI /FULL

This would give you the license termination date under the
"PAK Termination Date:" field

LIC LIST DLBPLUS/FULL did the trick.

Some clarification...

Some PAKs have expiry dates. They are relatively rare.

An expired PAK cannot be loaded, so for a LICENSE-E-TERM message on system startup, the offending PAK will be in the License Data Base (LDB) on disk.

A LICENSE-E-TERM message from an interactive command indicates the expired PAK is in memory and should therefore be visible with the SHOW LICENSE command. The PAK will also be in the LDB.

$ SHOW LICENSE/WARNING[=days]

can be used to generate warnings for PAKs which are due to expire soon. The default is 30 days.

Running a SHOW LICENSE/WARNING on the first of each month is a good idea if you have PAKs with expiry dates.
