hyperterminal or analogue on OpenVMS

Hello!
Is there a terminal emulator program for OpenVMS
to access any hardware (UPS switch etc) via null-modem cable ?

SET HOST /DTE

Re: hyperterminal or analogue on OpenVMS

Try "set host /dte". For more options look at the VMS help for set host /dte.

Re: hyperterminal or analogue on OpenVMS

Hello Alex,

Have you tried "$ SET HOST /DTE"? We use it in similar situations.

Hi Alex!

C-Kermit is probably the best you can get.

Re: hyperterminal or analogue on OpenVMS

I use SET HOST /DTE (normally from a DECterm)
for interactive use (because it's always
there), and Kermit if I need to script
something (like restarting my Cisco 678 DSL
modem/router automatically).

Re: hyperterminal or analogue on OpenVMS

If you could attach your serial device to a terminal server, you open up options such as TELNET or SET HOST/LAT. Lantronix still makes "modern" terminal servers ie. you wouldn't have to go to the wrecking yard and dig out a DECserver!

Still unclear.
This command should be followed by device name.
It is unclear what is the device for com port 0
/dev/ttyS0 in Linux notation.

Re: hyperterminal or analogue on OpenVMS

Depending on the system model and where you have physically plugged in the cable, it's most likely TTA0:

$ SHOW DEVICE TT might help you.

Re: hyperterminal or analogue on OpenVMS

hmm, still unuseful

I have fta2:. I'm not sure it is com 0.

I have no '@' key - cant press ctrl/@

C-Kermit is for transfer files between hosts via null-modem cable, isnt it?

No useful utilites such as minicom ?

Re: hyperterminal or analogue on OpenVMS

Sorry, a SHOW DEV TT doesn't show them for some reason. Try a SHOW DEVICE TTA and SHOW DEVICE TTB. The built-in serial ports are usually OPA0: (but you don't want to use the console port), TTA0: and TTB0:

Compare it with your description of your
system model, which still rates at a perfect
zero on the usefulness scale.

What's Shift/2 on your keyboard? Perhaps
some description of _all_ your hardware would
be useful.

> C-Kermit is for transfer files between

Among other things. Perhaps you should
follow that link and read more about Kermit.

> No useful utilites such as minicom ?

Don't need any. As you can see, everyone
(else) does just fine with SET HOST /DTE.

Were you planning to ask how to build a cable
without telling us about any of the hardware,
too?

Re: hyperterminal or analogue on OpenVMS

Thank you. But I have no TTA etc

I have
OPA0: Online 0
OPA1: Online 0
OPA4: Online 0
MPA0: Online 0
OPA2: Online 0
OPA3: Online 0

Still dont know how to send ctrl/@
I have pc-style keyboard without @
(symbol @ is generated by shift/2)

Oh. You must mean _this_ "Ctrl/@"

Press Ctrl/\ to quit, Ctrl/@ for command mode

Try Ctrl/Space.

Re: hyperterminal or analogue on OpenVMS

My ES47's don't have TTA0 or TTB0 devices either, but I also don't have a serial connector on the back of them either.

One more request for you to disclose a few more details of what kind of system you're working on.

How would minicom know what to connect to if you had it?!

I assume that it's psychic, unlike me.

Re: hyperterminal or analogue on OpenVMS

Ok system is Jensen OpenVMS 8.2

I tried
$set host /dte OPA0: (I think it is COM 0)
ctrl/ (thank you very much)

DTEPAD>show dte
Terminal port OPA0: NOEIGHT_BIT NOECHO
Flow control XON/XOFF
Parity NONE
Transmit speed 9600
Receive speed 9600
Error action CONTINUE
Break character ]
Escape character \
Command character @
Maximum buffers 100
Read delay 50 milliseconds
Log file NONE

Bytes transmitted 0
Bytes received 0
Errors 0

Its time now to start terminal emulation.

Fairly easy. Much more easy.
I setup serial device (ttyS0, speed) and
feyyuu - I am in the console of the device.
I dont understand why this very simple operation should be so complex in VMS.

And what's that? I don't know the project
code names. What does it say on the front?

What does it have for serial ports on the
back?

Are you using a DECwindows interface (with
a DECterm), or a real serial terminal?

Pulling teeth is easier than this.

> I cant see any command that help me with it

Don't say Ctrl/@, or, if you do, try Ctrl/Z,

Then start typing.

Let me guess. The cable doesn't work.

BTW Jensen has two integrated RS-232 serial ports.
I just check on the Itanium rx1620 - have one serial RS-232 also.

Probably has something to do with who's doing
the work.

How did you know it was named "ttyS0"?

On my system, TTA0 is connected to a Sun
Netra t1 105:

alp $ set host /dte tta0

%REM-I-TOQUIT, connection established

Press Ctrl/\ to quit, Ctrl/@ for command mode

lom>help
The following commands are supported:

alarmon
alarmoff
check
console
environment
faulton
faultoff
help
poweron
poweroff
reset
show
version
lom> [Ctrl/\]
%REM-S-END, control returned to node ALP

How hard and/or complex was that?

Re: hyperterminal or analogue on OpenVMS

Fairly easy. I seems to do not understand what is the surprise.
In minicom I just setup serial device, speed check protocol and vou-a-la I'm in terminal. I can access the device. I really do not understand why this very trivial operation should be complex.

Re: hyperterminal or analogue on OpenVMS

It seems we do not understand us. May be the reason lies in my bad English.

Ok.

1. There is an Jensen ( or rx1620 - not very impotent I think. I have both)

2. There is an serial port integrated into motherboard.

3. There is an Smart UPS SC with RSR232 communication port.

4. There is an a serial cable and it attached
from UPS to Serial port of the computer.

5. There is an OpenVMS 8.2 (Jensen) 8.3-H1 rx1620.

how to I can connect my UPS from OpenVMS via terminal emulation program?

In Linux on the same machine I can fairly quickly connect to the UPS via minicom or etc during a five or ten seconds.
For many reason I cant reboot the system and now staying in VMS.

Re: hyperterminal or analogue on OpenVMS

It's not "that" complex but different systems have different hardware components such as serial connections. If you can plug that null modem cable into your laptop and use something like hyperterminal, can you get a Username: prompt? Try the typical 9600 8 bit/no stop bit.

If so, log in and then do a SHOW TERMINAL ... the very first piece of info it tells is the terminal name eg.: TTA0. The SHOW TERMINAL command will also show all the characteristics for the port line speed, # of bits etc. You can change these characteristics with SET TERMINAL TTA0 /xxx=yyy, see HELP SET TERMINAL on what you can do.

One more time, what model of system hardware is it? Should be something like AS1200 or DS10 or ES40 or ???

He answered that; he said

"There is an Jensen ( or rx1620 - not very impotent I think. I have both"

--

The Jensen is the old, somewhat odd DEC 200-3000 (or DECpc 150), whereas the rx1620 is, well, an rx1620.

---

However, specifying the exact hardware model
is quite important.
