"create a user just to collect points from congrats threads in *all* forums and see how far you can get."

I think this has been tried and stopped. See

Re: :-O VMS is on "top members"

@Ian

no - that user did no congrats.
He only created 2 user id's or had one friend and answered to the other thread 101 times. So he got 1010 pts.
As Cheryl explained - the thread was erased. The user id not (yet).
But Merijn excluded it from his stats.

Ian,
look at http://forums2.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/categoryhome.do?categoryId=296
that's the main page of your link. You can see BFA1, BFA2 and BFA3 id; they are banned identity and are showed after recently ITRC software upgrade.

Re: :-O VMS is on "top members"

Uwe,

You've been a tremendous help to all the VMS ITRC forum community. Thanks from all of us for that; and from me individually, thanks for your comments and suggestions in response to my own questions.

Looking forward to observing your continuing rise up the charts--

Galen

P.S. As one who has benefitted in a small way from posting congratulatory responses--

I think a small recompense of this type is good to help maintain the best cooperative spirit on the forum. It might be nice if there were some way a moderator-type person could easiy watch for abuse though. (Or is there?)

I will certainly do my best to contribute a proportion of helpful comments (vs. congratulations) to keep things balanced: even with points from my congratulatory remarks, I still stand far off the bottom of the chart at a humble 134 points.

"I think this has been tried and stopped."

Yes, and Yes.

The 'congratulator' had just reached 'Magician' on congrats alone, but all at a sudden (s)he was gone, and even the pointers to those postings I have been unable to find again (not really sought very hard though).

Keep up the good work.

It is only because VMS is great and the customers are loyal that it has survived the
days since Palmer who said to run NT on Alpha. (Of course we know what happened then).

VMS continues to be the most secure system in the world. And, we can do things at the OS level instead of using mouses and destroying our hands.

Re: :-O VMS is on "top members"

Antonio,

RSI is "repetetive strain injury" (or similar)
which comes about by using muscles in a repetetive
manner. Users of keyboards, mice, even production
line employees and musicians are susceptible.
It was very "popular" years ago and resulted in
the introduction of various ergonomic designs for
office furniture and the like. There seems to be
little publicity of it of late but it is still
"out there".
It is usually associated with muscle actions that
are repetetive and restrictive i.e. not using
the muscles to there fullest extent.

Re: :-O VMS is on "top members"

Atonio,

the "popular" name for RSI is "mouse arm".
That should tell enought.

Re: :-O VMS is on "top members"

It sounds like a bad thing (in Italian language I tell "bad beast"). I try to avoid that playing to five side football (I'm Italian man!) as goalkeeper. I don't know if thi help me, but it's more funny than M$ windows.

Re: :-O VMS is on "top members"

This forum is a superb knowledgebase and usually a posting receives a number of high quality responses in a short time. However, one fears that awarding points in this type of thread may undermine somewhat the otherwise professional nature of the ITRC OpenVMS forum and possibly demean the value of the points accumulated by the many worthy posters.

My feeling is that many high-quality answers in many forums do not get rated at all - in the end it should 'level out'.

Re: :-O VMS is on "top members"

Peter,

Once you have been around ITRC for a while, you will
find those that give 10 points for *any* answer and
those that may seem to be very mean with their point
allocations and those that don't bother to award
any points at all, even when they get "good" answers.
As Uwe said - in the end it should 'level out'.

Re: :-O VMS is on "top members"

Peter,

there is also a bit of socialising involved.

You will notice that especially the frequent visitors (who tend to be also more answering and less asking) DO like to get to know each other some more than just purely the technical level.

At least I know that _I_ enjoy some bantering on the side, and I know some regulars to be no different.

Kind of makes us look human after all...

Uwe moved to 24 already.
It took him 6 days.
So within 23 * 6 = 138 days he will be first.
Too simplistic thinking maybe? :D

It took me 1Y5M to get from 0 to about 12500. Clay is currently at 62691. Do the math, but don't overlook that most if not all nice & helpful people "in front of me" don't stand still either.
