Running OpenVMS 7.3-2 on Itanium RX4640 servers

I'm currently running OpenVMS 7.3-2 on an ES45 - I would like to know if I can run the same OpenVMS version on my Itanium server or I have to run 8.0 or newer??

Thank you in advance.

Ian,

You should run VMS 8.2 on the Itanium RX4640 server. All previous versions were only test versions.

Re: Running OpenVMS 7.3-2 on Itanium RX4640 servers

To amplify the previous reply; OpenVMS V7.3-2 never existed for I64. The first "version" to run on any I64 was E8.0 (the "E" standing for
evaluation to connote the fact that it was not
a full, production-ready implementation).

It's quite possible that the RX4640 will not boot on anything earlier than V8.2.

Note also that there now exists OpenVMS V8.2-1 with some added benefits so you might as well start with the latest and greatest. Itanium running V8.2-1 can be clustered with an Alpha running V7.3-2. See

Ian,
licensing on OpenVMS 8.2 is completely different from older version.
Ask to your local HP vendor.

Re: Running OpenVMS 7.3-2 on Itanium RX4640 servers

Ian,

I concur with Rob Brooks.

OpenVMS 8.2 is the first production quality release on an Itanium/Integirty platform. For historical conext:

8.0 was a pre-Field Test version with extremely limited distribution
8.1 was the designation used for the early Field Test versions that were distributed.

8.2 is fully supported in a cluster with a 7.3-2 system (Alpha). It also works (I forget offhand if this is supported) with VAX 7.3 (there is no 7.3-2 VAX version). As a side note, I will observe that mixed architecture clusters are a very strong adoption aid for the new architecture.

My recollection (please check the SPD) is that rx4640 servers were among the systems supported under 8.2. The primary changes for 8.2-1, as I recall, were the support for the cell-based larger systems (e.g. Superdome).

I would recommend making sure that you get all of the patches (8.2-1, being later, should have most of the patches already integrated into the master).

I hope that the above is helpful.
