Switching OMTOOL FAXSR from DecServer 700 port to TTA port

What cabling is needed to hook up the older version of OMTOOL's FAXSR multitech modem to the back of an alphaserver on a TTB0 port,
if switching from a decserver 700 port setup?

Re: Switching OMTOOL FAXSR from DecServer 700 port to TTA port

Which "multitech modem"? What's the
connector on it?

Which "alphaserver"? What's the connector on
it?

Normally, a PC-compatible, 9-pin Female to
25-pin Male, straight-through cable would be
my guess, but with no useful info to go on,
it's tough to do more than guess.

Model MT1932ZDX. 25-pin female connector.

Alpha Server ES40 model. 9-pin TTA/TTB connecter, with obverse to the older DEC flat cable. Running the obverse of this plug to a standalone DC Flat cable connector /25-pin female connector. Then running a 25-pin male to 25-pin male straight thru cable to the multi-tech modem's female plug.

Normally, a PC-compatible, 9-pin Female to
25-pin Male, straight-through cable would be
my guess, but with no useful info to go on,

Need to shop for this type of 9-pin Female tpo 25-pin Male straight thru cable, I guess. Trying to impovise without one, and that could be the issue.

On the VMS side, the OMTOOL manual for FAXSR gives the commands:

$ SET TERMINAL devicename /SPEED=19200/NOMODEM/PERM
( I used TTB0 for devicename )

Then you are supposed to be able to test the modem using SET HOST:
$ SET HOST devicename /DTE
and test ATZ... TEST ATE1...etc.

All I get is this.....

$ set host ttb0/dte

%REM-I-TOQUIT, connection established

Press Ctrl/\ to quit, Ctrl/@ for command mode

CTRL/@ {enter}
DTEPAD> atz
%CLI-W-IVVERB, unrecognized command verb - check validity and spelling
\ATZ\
Message number 8007A5F4
DTEPAD> exit
CTRL/\
$

Think its the cable between the modem and the TTB0 9-ping plug on the back of the ES40 alphaserver? This is the lower of two 9-pin plugs on the ES40, and the other is for a serial Dec 420 monitor.

Re: Switching OMTOOL FAXSR from DecServer 700 port to TTA port

David,

the CTRL/@ is to get you to the DTEPAD command mode - not your modem!

Instead of doing CTRL/@, just enter your ATZ commands etc. You are already connected to the device. You then use CTRL/\ to break off the device, and back to DCL.

Re: Switching OMTOOL FAXSR from DecServer 700 port to TTA port

Thanks Duncan, but I get no response that way from VMS:

set host ttb0/dte

%REM-I-TOQUIT, connection established

Press Ctrl/\ to quit, Ctrl/@ for command mode

ATZ will not even show on the acreen, when typed.

Re: Switching OMTOOL FAXSR from DecServer 700 port to TTA port

Check your port in the ES40 user guide, and look at the "Using the Remote Management Console" chapter.

The upper 9 pin port is for the RMC modem connection.

The lower port (with your VT420) is COM2, and the MMJ connector is COM1.

Try logging into the ES40 from the VT420 and you will see which port it is configure as. I would think that it is on TTB0.

Re: Switching OMTOOL FAXSR from DecServer 700 port to TTA port

I switched the port plug so the modem is on TTAO and the serial console on port TTB0.
Defined the port b for a vt400 series, and was able to log in as a serial console. Woohoo! And the TTA0 works is repsonding with the modem as well. Needs a little
fine tuning, bu this should work. Thanks for the wonderful input. David

OMTOOL FAXSR Manual

I have been recently asked to support a VMS 7.3 system running FAXSR - and in desperate need of the user's guide - Does anyone know where I can find a copy of the manual? (Preferably digital but old fashion paper manual will do just as well).  Thanks in advance!
