Re: The new king of VMS

Congrats, Ian!

I've been into VMS since 1989 (VMS 5.x), coming from the (application) programming side to more and more system management and support.

Age 45, with a girlfriend, but no kids, dogs, or cats - instead I have a VAX and several Alphas at home which keep me busy ;-)

Re: The new king of VMS

Congratulations Ian and my personal thanks for help you've provided me!

Born and never left (yet!) Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada - I'm 44, wife, two daughters and a female dog...it's pretty one-sided in my house :-(

Starting in 1980, I was a tech with Control Data Canada who OEM'd disk drives for Digital (DEC's RMxx series of drives were really CDC 97xx drives), I worked for Digital as a field tech from '86 - '91 working on "everything" Digital made. Started w/VMS around v4.3 if IRC. Left and became VMS manager/chief cook and bottlewasher for an insurance company...my claim to fame was I brought the first Alpha 8200 to this city (remember the "TurboLaser" moniker for the 8200?). Left VMS entirely for 4 years because I thought being an NT admin would be good career move - my hair never did grow back! :-( . Now I'm back to VMS almost full-time with a large media company - VMS is used in their newspaper business. I'm getting more involved with Telecom as we roll Avaya PBX's out across the country.

Cheers,
Art

Re: The new king of VMS

Hello,

All the best to Ian, he certainly deserves the crown (and for the time being) the first place ;-)

I am currently getting regularly odd jobs from hight up in the food chain, that is the reason I have been pretty quiet recently.

As to me

Born 1966 in Germany, education as a Physicist,
started with VMS in 87 doing data analysis.
First job in the industry was 1995 with SAS Institute supporting VMS and Unix customers with addtional emphasis on database and connectivity issues. Since 1998 with Deutsche Boerse (German Exchange) and since three years for them in Chicago. Married since 91, three boys (9,7, and 5yr). Hobbies: VMS ;-), reading, long-distance running.

Re: The new king of VMS

Hi to all!
Sorry, no answer but I was in Rome for HP/Magirus Boot Camp about porting VMS on Itanium :-) :-O
I heard a lot of good news about VMS and I'm very very happy today!

Lokesh,
sorry I forgot you in Guru List: don't offend, please; I assigned you a bunny for my apologize.

Michelle,
welcome to VMS forum; you aren't the first X chromosome to post here: I remember Sue Stonesky but you are the first technical girl here; well done! :-)

Thank to allbodies for posts, hints nad news; now we have better knowlledge about ourself.

Re: The new king of VMS

Congratulations Ian! Thanks for spreading your wisdom amongst us.

My bio:

Born in 1960, built my first computer 1976-77 (a Z-80 kit from The Digital Group), college 1978-1983 where I was introduced to DEC, RT-11, RSTS/E and VAX/VMS. Got my first job programming VAX-11 BASIC in 1983 and eventually became their system admin in 1985. Also became the Oracle DBA and since then have done one or the other with a bit of (ugh) Windows stuff when necessary. Added Linux in 1998 to keep busy as my chances at VMS get fewer and fewer. Discovered used Alphas on E-Bay in 2003 and now have several at home to keep me happy. (Praying the Hobbyist License program never dies...)

Cheers,
John
