I would be interested to findout other peoples experience on this ie pitfalls, things to watch out for. Are there any Layered products that are supported?. Our application is written in Basic/RMS and we also use Datatrieve.
Solved! Go to Solution.

Re: Upgrade of v7.3-2 to v8.2
Don't know about Datatrieve.
But I recently upgraded an Alpha cluster from V7.3-2 to V8.2 without problems.
Our applications still worked (without recompiling/relinking).
Make sure however that you install the latest patches.

Kris (aka Qkcl)

Re: Upgrade of v7.3-2 to v8.2
The other step I did during that upgrade was migrate from Multinet to HP TCPIP.
I would suggest upgrading a test system and verify your basic applications will run on the new os. If not then see if they compile or if you need the latest compiler.

Re: Upgrade of v7.3-2 to v8.2
I'd review DEC$BASRTL Facility Patch Kit For OpenVMS Alpha V8.2
see; http://www4.itrc.hp.com/service/patch/patchDetail.do?patchid=VMS82A_BASRTL-V0100&sel={openvms:alpha:8.2,}&BC=main|search|
Another Basic site I know run into problems prior to applying this patch.
There's a newer version of TCP/IP available (V5.5 + Eco1)
Regards,
John.

Re: Upgrade of v7.3-2 to v8.2
>> Prior Version Support in Dec 06 I am planning to upgrade to V8.2.
OpenVMS 8.3 will be out well before 7.3-2 is going to PVS ( > 90 days i think).
I have never seen HP ( or Compaq or Digital) use any kind of "stop-watch" for normal contract customers.
You will NOT be in any special support limbo in January 2007 if your cluster runs an updated 7.3-2.
Only if you want to stay on 7.3-2 will you need a PVS contract.
I would check OpenVMS 8.3 with your software products, wait some 3-4 month after the 8.3 release, check the the first few patches and then upgrade directly to OpenVMS 8.3.
7.3-2 will stay with us for a long time while 8.2 will NOT.

Re: Upgrade of v7.3-2 to v8.2
As others said there won't be any problem upgrading 7.3-2 to 8.2 on Alpha and running your application withour compile/link. But if there are any need to compile/link your source, then there are new RTL functions added in 8.2. And if it is a migration going from Alpha to Itanium, then there are products which uses the platform dependant native data types in different way (ex: RMS, Oracle RDB, Datatrieve, COBOL, etc...) In those situation, we have add compile/link time switches to be used as per our requirements. Anyway this is not your requirements. So no need to worry now.

Re: Upgrade of v7.3-2 to v8.2
Also had to relink 1 program that started looping. Don't took notes which one it was (system is gone now) but it was one last linked on 6.2 1h3.

Re: Upgrade of v7.3-2 to v8.2
IBM Worldsphere MQ (formally MQS), Heroix eQ, Perfcap and Diskeeper needed latest versions of the products. TIBCO RVD required no changes.
Still using C V6.5 compiler. Upgraded CMS/MMS (just to get the lastest and greatest).
Protection of queues seems to be different. We run our queues with (W:S) on V7.3-2, but we had to set them to (W:RS) to make them work. (I really need to read the RNs to see if that is called out.)
There are a couple dozen patches that need to be installed.
RMS works fine (our app uses about 900GB of RMS indexed and sequential files).
Most of our Perl CPAN modules loaded with no problems. A couple required extra effort.
Had to upgrade part of Pathworks V6.1 to Advanced Server.

Re: Upgrade of v7.3-2 to v8.2
BTW : if you migrate from UCX to TCP there might be other problems too. Idem decnet / decnet+.
