I have a question about the Graphic Console,
We had a powerdown yesterday and the server reboot but after the reboot , as soon as i loggin into the system, the graphic console is frozen, i try to move the mouse but it doesnt work.
I also started the Xserver xlogin start from a workstation but still the same.
I stop the dtlogin process and then i started again and i went to check in the server console and the console was unfrozen but after i logged into the system the graphic console still frozen..
Does anybody know what this can be ??
thanks in advance .
Bruno

Re: Graphic Console Frozen
Check ~/.dt/*error* file if problem is cde related.

Re: Graphic Console Frozen
I checked the /var/adm/messages file and it says :
/usr/dt/bin/ttsession[912]: Cannot register service: RPC: Timed out
I checked the /etc/services file and the RPC line starts with erpc.. is this right or it should only be rpc in the /etc/services file instead of erpc?
Thanks a lot

Re: Graphic Console Frozen
Well the cde is not working via workstation , only in the server but it is the server that is frozen. i can´t even change to command line. because it´s frozen.
I checked the dt/Xerror file and it gives me the following message :
error (pid 1592): Cannot convert Internet address 10.251.36.162 to host name
Any ideia ?

Re: Graphic Console Frozen
I changed the /etc/services file to RPC instead of ERPC that was in the /etc/services file.
But it still the same .
I stopped the Xlogin and then it prompt to to me the command line.
But as soon as i start the Xlogin the server console gets frozen again ..
Any ideia everyone ?
Thanks very much

Re: Graphic Console Frozen
Btw. have you checked the failsafe mode on the server side? If this works it is definitly a network/cde issue!!!!!

Re: Graphic Console Frozen
I feel your pain. In general I would approach this by starting at the lower layers and work up. While other OS errors are helpful, they seem to come from such disparate places that a common element might be failing, such as a board or bus. I apologize if these steps have already been taken.
First, let's start at the obvious:
Have you moved the mouse and keyboard to another computer and used them successfully for several minutes?
Next, shutdown and power off the system. Power it up, and when the firmware comes up, at the console prompt enter
>>> show config
make sure the ethernet board, ISA bus, the keyboard, and mouse are present
Then Reboot and watch the messages that scroll by. What if any messages might indicate a hardware failure?
From a telnet session as SU:
# hwmgr -show components
do you see an entry for an ISA bus, the keyboard and mouse?
Use DECEvent to examine the event log for failures. If no DECEvent loaded, then enter UERF and follow it to find the day's errors/entries that are relevant.
It's difficult to trace a problem's cause sometimes from symptoms. This bottom up approach serves me well when things become non-obvious.
Good luck. Joe S.

Re: Graphic Console Frozen
Well i try to execute the command show , but it does work.
When i type the command ifconfig -a it brings the following :
tu0: flags=c63
inet 10.251.36.37 netmask fffffc00 broadcast 10.251.39.255 ipmtu 1500
sl0: flags=10
lo0: flags=100c89
inet 127.0.0.1 netmask ff000000 ipmtu 4096
ppp0: flags=10
The console still frozen ... i cannot boot the system because i have production database running in .
I want to thank everybody that is helping me out with this problem ...

Re: Graphic Console Frozen
Output from the ifconfig command looks O.K.
You wrote:
>Well i try to execute the command show , >but it does work.
I think you meant to type "... it did not work ...", am I correct?
If by "show" you mean that the "show config" command did not work, it is because the system is not at the console prompt, usually designated by three ">>>"s.
What is the result of the other suggestions? Best of luck in this.

Re: Graphic Console Frozen
I haven´t checked the network configuration yet.
It´s real hard because i don´t even have any documentation for this server.
Talking about the show config , i am at the prompt but when i type it , it says "not found"
Maybe there is another command that does the same thing as the show config. do you know ?
thanks

Re: Graphic Console Frozen
# hwmgr -show components
It will print out, of most importance in your problem, near the bottom of the output, two lines about the devices keyboard0, and mouse0, if they are "seen" by the system.
If not, then you must call HP hardware support. At some point, either to troubleshoot or repair the system, you will have to shutdown the system.
For the moment I am all out of ideas. Wish I were there to pound on the keyboard.

Re: Graphic Console Frozen
At some point it is good to declare victory and place a call with HP support. Your system's problems exceed my abilities, and what might be done for this problem via this forum. IMHO, you will solve this probmlem more quickly if you sought on-site troubleshooting. Call HP support.
We've all been there. Recently, I could not get a new system to see a tape device. I checked firmware, Quick Specs, Google, and the documentation. The solution came when my field rep looked aT the SCSI cable, took out his Swiss Army knife and bent a pin back in place!
Best of luck!

Re: Graphic Console Frozen
are you talking about the hwmgr command?
If you have got Tru Unix 4.X, you do not have that command.
You must stop the machine as root with init 0
Then, when you the >>> prompt, use show command.
Have you been in /var/adm/syslog.dated/current and looked into daemon.log and user.log. If there are any errors, not mentioned here, post them
greetings,
Michael
