HP DAT72 on AlphaServer DS20

Hi...
I have AlphaServer DS20, There was already a tape drive(Compaq TLZ10) installed on it, which became faulty. Now I replaced the tape drive with HP DAT72. The SCSI connector on new tape drive is 68-pin(SCSI3), and the cable through which we connect the tape drive is of 50-pin(SCSI1). For this, I am using the SCSI Converter for it. Now the issue is when I reboot the server it gives me error like

SCSI error for target 1 sist0 = 0x41
cam-logger: SCSI event packet
cam_logger = bus0
itpse SCSI HBA
HTH intr. on bus 0
SBCL = 0xa3
.............

I do the hwmgr -show scsi, it only shows the tape but not the path, as it shows the same when there is no tape drive attach to the server. But when there is no tape drive attached to the server it wont give the above error (SCSI error for target ...)

Can anyone help?

With which SCSI adapter(s), connected to
what, how? SCSI ID of everything?

Why not use a 68-pin cable (with a 68-pin
terminator)? What else is on that cable?

Hi,

As suggested previously, knowing exactly how the DAT drive is connected will help.

Also bear in mind that you'll need to be running at least Patch Kit 5.

show that you need to be connecting the drive to a 3X-KZPCA-AA or 3X-KZPEA-DB controller.

first, make sure a correct scsi type is used.
50-pins may indicate the old connection was "standard scsi" and the 68-pin may be LVD-scsi (low voltage).
if so the old controller is not optimal/ compatible with the new drive.
beter use 68pin-68pin cable as allready suggested.
second, check if a correct scsi-terminator is used.
third, as hwmgr -show scsi does not show the drive, do a "hwmgr -scan scsi" to rescan the scsi bus.
a new device will be created (tape1).
you may want to use "hwmgr -e tape1 tape0" (exchange) to keep references to the drive as tape0 (if used in scripts).

I cant use 68 pin cable b'coz there is D-ROM which attached to the same cable, and also its a internal tape drive so there is no terminator.
OS is TRU64 UNIX 5.1A

How can I check the controllers that it is either 3X-KZPCA-AA or 3X-KZPEA-DB

Yes, I am using the correct SCSI type.
secondly, I have also perform the hwmgr -scan scsi
but result was same

One more thing, that I have removed the old Tape drive but it still shown in the hwmgr -show scsi with 'null'

is it possible to install the tape drive manually?

the old unit still present in hwmgr is "intended behavour".
That is lists empty means it is not detected on the bus.

I don't think you've got the right device for this bus.
research on specs bring this up:

lists the tlz10 as 12/24GB DAT
section "Technical Specifications" lists the 12/24 DAT as Fast-Wide/ SE
As you say you've got a CDROM connected to the same bus,
that also suggests Fast-Wide/SE IS the type of scsi active on this cable.
NB! this is NOT "LVD" (low voltage).

lists the drive HP DAT72 as Ultra160 LVD SCSI

you cannot mix LVD devices and "normal" SCSI on the same bus.

I've also tried it by unplugging the CD-ROM, but the result was same.

1. _Any_ proper SCSI configuration has a
terminator at each end of the cable.

2. I know nothing about your tape drive, or
its SCSI connector, but I've seen 50-68-pin
SCSI adapters used to connect a 50-pin device
to a 68-pin cable.

I have changed the Tape Drive to HP DDS3 12/24

Server detects it as Tape1, which I then changed it to Tape0.

Now I am taking backup through 'vdump -0u [path]'

On smaller data, it works fine but when I tried it to large data it works slow and give the error 'unable to properly close device ; [5] I/O error'

someone have any idea regarding this error???

As previously suggested, I'll guess that the termination of the drive/SCSI bus isn't correct.

Can you explain exactly how things are now connected ?

Hi Rob,
its a 50-pin internal scsi cable, devices attached to it are CDROM and Tape and at the end there is a TERMINATOR.

Hi,

Check the jumpers on the drive.

You sometimes get one which enables termination. If that is installed, then you'll need to remove it if the end of the ribbon cable also has a terminator.

The jumper setting on old drive was set to SCSI1, so the same I did with this new drive.
I have also check the switches on tape, it is fine.

and yes there is a terminator at the end.

If you're sure that things are connected correctly, then download Library and Tape Tools (L&TT) and run the diagnostics tests.
