8230e & NERO

Using NERO under windows 2000 or windows 98se I get an "Invalid Command" during DAO writing sessions, all is ok using included software. Someone had same experience? Some hints?

Re: 8230e & NERO

Claudio,

Nero recommends to make sure you have the latest firmware and to change a config file in Nero.

you can find this recommendation at http://www.ahead.de/en/helptool/848.htm#o848

Hope this helps,

I'm having exactly the same problems using Windows 2000 (sp2) - and there doesn't seem to be a firmware update. Claudio, if you have solved this, I'd be grateful if you'd contact me - or anyone else for that matter.

Cheers

Re: 8230e & NERO

I am experiencing exactly the same problems with HP8230e, Win2000, and Nero writing DAO sessions. I have tried just about everything and have de-installed all other CD-RW software. I have noticed the write operation will get further through the burn before failing if you increase the size of the buffer. When the buffer gets full, the burn terminates with an invalid command. I'm not sure if Nero only starts burning when the buffer is full and this is the first write operation, or the failure is because the buffer has become full. If you manage to fix this pleas let me know, as I'm getting desperate.

Re: 8230e & NERO

I've more or less given up on this for the time being! HP Record Now,
which you can download, is marginally better than the application which comes with the writer, but I still want to use Nero.

I'm hoping that I'll be able to use
Nero in the future, and I note that
Windows 2000 SP3 is due soon, which has lots of USB fixes in. This
MIGHT help. Neither HP nor Nero
have been particularly helpful when
I reported the problem.

Re: 8230e & NERO

Well, the problem is not Windows 2000: I've tried on Win98se and the "Invalid command" error is the same. In my opinion, the reason is only a Nero program mistake.
But I've also read some strange things about power of USB on laptop: I'm wondering if there is something wrong on my Asus L8400... So the question is: "there is someone that used Nero DAO feature on 8230e? On which model of PC?"

Re: 8230e & NERO

I happen to have an earlier 8230e where Nero works fine. The unit identifies itself as an 8200a, while the later unit is an 8200f.

I've tried side by side comparison - i.e. Boot, burn, shutdown. Of the 3 units we have the only one works. The 8200a version of the 8230 has two lights side by side between the "Multiread" and the "compact disk" logos. The 8200f version of the 8230 has a light above and slightly left of the multiread logo, and another to the right of the compact disk logo.

Re: 8230e & NERO

Yes I have the 8200f which has exactly the symtoms described. That hole above & left of multiread logo isn't a light though. I reckon it's the eject pinhole (although I haven't actually used it). If what you say is right then I'm particularly annoyed. It seems likely that there is a DAO problem because I found earlier that Nero will burn audio OK at TAO using this unit, and only have problems with DAO. I've also used it with CloneCD in RAW mode and it seemed to work OK.

Will look forward to what HP have to say because so far they have particularly unhelpful with my queries.

Re: 8230e & NERO

I've been on the phone with HP support here in Canada every day for the last week, to close in on the problem.

Yesterday, they asked me to take the problem up with Nero. After some slightly more heated discussion, they then said it should work with Adaptec (now Roxio) software. I borrowed a copy of Adaptec Easy CD Creator Platinum (which, BTW, is what the current HP installation software suggests one should upgrade to).

The result was then when using DirectCD to copy a CD, the "disc-at-once" check box was greyed out when the newer 8230 (i.e. the 8200f version) was selected. When the old (8200a) unit was selected, the checkbox was not greyed out. Similarly, with a Teac CDW24E drive the feature was available.

So, this software, unlike Nero, "knows" that the DAO function is unavailable with this unit. The HP spec for the 8230e at http://www.cdwriter.com/products/8200e/specifications.asp states that DAO is in fact support. Therefore, this unit, that of my colleague, and as I understand from this forum, several others around the world, does not conform to HP's own specification.

Furthermore, the Roxio software is clearly aware of this defect. It is suprising, therefore, that HP is not. It would be more surprise, though, given HP's reputation for service, if HP actually knows about this problem but continues to sell it under the published spec, and does not advise their support people of the existence of the problem.

QED

I'm waiting for an HP product specialist to get back to me by Friday at noon as promised. I'm asking for either a fix or a refund.

Re: 8230e & NERO

guys, same problem here... I bought today a hp 8230f and nero doesn't want to deal with it... :(( I was borderline in buying the burner, since 50% of the reviewers love it and the other 50% hate it.. what to do now? I didn't try Easy CD, should I or will I get the same result? Does it make sense to ask HP to give us a unit with an earlier firmware to coorect tis problem? Shouldn't they come up with a new firmware that correct this (obvious) bug?

Re: 8230e & NERO

I got hold of a copy of EZCS5 (just to make sure it would work), and guess what - It did!

I am now using EZCD & directCD5 with no problems.

HP support in Australia were looking for an older version of the 8230e but were not hopeful. So it looks like I'm stuck with EZCD until maybe there is a firmware fix, or Nero/winonCD have a compatible software version.

I have the same problem. My version came with MYCD so I upgraded to Stomp RecordNow MAX. But, no luck. I even loaded their new driver from yesterday -- still making coasters.

Re: 8230e & NERO

Good morning.

I have the same problem with nero refusing to burn DAO on w2k.. nero v5.0.4.. It is a little bit different of an error, but I have a hunch that it is all the same problem..

The interesting thing about this is though, I have a w2k box @ work that does nothing but burning w/ nero w/ the same burner.

HAS EVERYONE DOWNLOADED THEIR DRIVERS OFF THE WEBSITE?????

I will have to investigate.. I actually have a hunch it might be slight differences between drivers since I have diff CDR drvs loaded on the w2k box @ work..

Re: 8230e & NERO

I've tried both the original plus updated driver from the HP download site with no difference.

BTW - I've also found that WinOnCD5 works fine (but not v3.8) so it may well be a Nero incompatibility. Maybe a later version of Nero will be OK.

Re: 8230e & NERO

The problem is solved by last version of Nero (5.564): yesterday I've recorded a CDR with DAO options using my 8200f unit. Thank you to all.

Re: 8230e & NERO

I've got problems with the XP version. It identifies itself as a 8290 instead of a 8230!!
Why doesn't HP recognize these problems? I was on the phone for a half hour with tech support about it also!!!! Their answer was that as long as it works with their s/w too bad!

Re: 8230e & NERO

I must have an older CD-R, as mine identifies itself as an 8200a (its an 8230e). I use Adaptec (provided with the CD-R) and it only completes part of a burn - about 23mins into a CD. I don't want to go out and spend more money on Nero (or can I download it?) for it to be unsuccessful too.
I don't want to do anything too complicated to "fix" this...it has been suggested I do strange things with my BIOS (washing powder?), disable things, enable things. I am not that clever! I can only just switch a PC on!!!
Is it plugged in?

I agree with Claudio. Nero 5.5.64
does the trick. At last!

Re: 8230e & NERO

Claudio / Ray,

I have also upgraded to Nero 5.5.6.4 and have had some success in writing single mode DAO CDs, i.e. pure data or pure audio. However, when attempting to burn a mixed mode DAO CD, the burn fails when attempting to cache the files, before the actual burn.
Do you experience similar problems? If not, have you made any other changes, for example installed, or de-installed drivers, etc.

Sorry about the length but HP need the WAKE UP.
Why am I being made to be a Hardware tester for HP?

I asked for this drive 8230e because I was told it does DAO
The drive fails to function as per HP specs.

It is time that all of us POUNDED on their door and ask for our money back or firmware upgrade.

Re: 8230e & NERO

By the look of the error log - if it says the device has a bad block, it probably means that the blank CD is bad. Has this happened with more than 1 burn?

Re mixed mode CDs. Try using the image recorder, rather than the actual CD. That should eliminate any hardware/driver related problems, and also let you experiment without messing up any CDs.

Re: 8230e & NERO

Chris,
Thanks for the suggestions,
I have another drive to transfer the data to so I am not really STUCK. I just want to DAO.
XP and my other CD-R live happily, why can't HP get it right. (BTW I have a Kodak (Mitsumi CR2801E)that has never burnt a coaster...)

I had Burning problems with the HP 8230 (8200f) so I:
Restored XP pro back to known good state.
Removed Nero 5.5.6.4

Installed Record Now.... tried audio and data, problems...
Restored XP pro back to known good state.

Installed ECDCV5.02d and the xp Patch then tried audio and data, problems
Restored XP pro back to known good state.

Installed Nero and ....
still problems...

I did not think it would have been al that hard to have a drive built today that works with todays software...
My Kodak is 4-5 years old and works like a charm...

It is a right to blame but all we want is to have the drive work as described. If we were to bill HP for our development time they would be crippled.

Enough rambling.
