CD Writer 7200 External

I just got a new compaq laptop and installed the windows 98 second edition upgrade and when I load the software my keyboard and mouse freeze up.

Bill, do you have a driver that would conect a Win ME OS and the HP CD writer plus 7200e.
know where I can get one?
