CD Writer Plus 8100i and 80 minute CDRs

My HP CD Writer Plus does not seem to recognise 80 min/700MB CDR disks. It
sees them as standard 650 MB disks, and records fine up to that size. I have
downloaded the latest HP version of Easy CD Creator 3.5c, but this makes no
difference.

Is there any way the unit will properly recognise the full size of the disk?

Re: CD Writer Plus 8100i and 80 minute CDRs

Hello,

The answer is simple... the 8100i is not compliant with 700Mb CD-Rs.

The below document states:
http://www.hp.com/cposupport/information_storage/support_doc/lpg40880.html

in the product summary part that it "saves and shares up to 650 MB of information world wide".

Compare this with the 8250i:
http://www.hpcdwriter.com/products/8200i/specifications.asp

which states that it is "80 minute CD Media compatible"

BTW,

The 8230e is not compatible either, see below:

http://www.hp.com/cposupport/information_storage/support_doc/lpg41276.html

However, the 9100 is compatible with 80 minute media. Maybe you should upgrade the firmware of the CD writer drive. Below is the link:

Re: CD Writer Plus 8100i and 80 minute CDRs

Hi. CD-Writer 8100 series can write over 80 minutes media, but can write only 78 minutes 30 seconds. You can see:
http://www.hp.com/cposupport/information_storage/support_doc/lpg40817.html (document for others models too).

Note: Verify firmware version, you must install 1.0g. (device manager - CDROM - properties). See:
http://www.hp.com/cgi-bin/cposupport/swindex.pl?p=hpcd-write9675&l=en&c=Firmware

Good luck!

Re: CD Writer Plus 8100i and 80 minute CDRs

Hello,

It's true, however, in that case, the CD is read to be a 74min and 650 Mb media. It can overburn that till 78 min 30 seconds. But basically you can do that on a 74min CD if you want.

Re: CD Writer Plus 8100i and 80 minute CDRs

I have since moved on to a new burner, but I did solve the puzzling 80min question a while back. HP burners are basically identical to another brand (can't remember which right now) but I basically flashed my burners bios with a different firmware to make it think it was a different burner. I had no problems burning 80min cd's after this. I still have the zip file kicking around somewhere...I think it's only for the 8100i burner (the one I had). Do a search with google or something and you may find one for your burner. It's a "at your own risk" thing, but with the price of burners dropping significantly if you have an older burner it might be worth the try. Take care,

Re: CD Writer Plus 8100i and 80 minute CDRs

Here's the answer...Plextor! Will write anything, will COPY anything! Recognizes EVERYTHING! I have a 9210i series SCSI burner and it is a huge disappointment. Plextor runs circles around it. I had hoped that HP would release an upgrade to expand this burners capabilities but no hope so far. Any help would be appreciated. Maybe the post about duping the burner into thinking its another brand.....can you dig up the details for us on this idea? Thanx anyways.
