Help with CD-Writer 8200 series PLEASE!!!!

I got a HP CD-Writer 8200 series from my brother. He dosent have the first installation disk. So my question is, will this burner work wuth any other cd buring program? Or do I need to order the proper installation disk? I tried using Nero 6 with the burner, but no luck. If any one can help me with this problem....please by all means do!
