HP Software disables both CD drives in Win2K

When i installed the HP Software for HP CD-Writer 9500 in Win 2000 it disabled both my Toshiba DVD and HP CD-R drives...They don't show up in MY Computer and cannot be used. In Device Manager it says that Windows cannot load the drivers for these devices (Code 31). I've tried several things to get at least the DVD drive back up and running, but the only thing that worked was reinstalling Win2K (I'm sure there's an easier way, but if there is i don't know it). Anyway, is there any way to get the HP drive to work with Win2000 (the HP web site says that it is compatible)? Do i need to upgrade the software or firmware?

Re: HP Software disables both CD drives in Win2K

Hello all . . . Brad E-Mailed me this . . .

"I emailed Hp tech support about the problem and surprisingly they emailed me back like 20 mins later with the solution....If you have Windows Media Player 7.1 installed then go into add remove programs and click on remove for Win Media Player and then check the box next to "Adaptec Cd-Burning Plugin" to remove it. Aparently this part of Win media player creates a conflict by installing its own driver. I did this and after rebooting the prob was fixed. I've burned 5 or 6 cd's since then with zero probs.

"Oh, and if this works for you, could you post another reply on the forum with the solution...i can't seem to figure out my user id or password for it :)

"Good luck"

. . . it worked for me . . . it might work for you now that you've found this!

Kind Regards,
Michael

You should then be able to re-install WMP without the Adaptec Plugin.
Make a great day!

Thankyou very much for this note. I ran into the same exact problem on my system. I followed your instructions and uninstalled windows media player and rebooted. Both my DVD and CD writer started working!
