HPcd-writer 8200e series

I have a Compaq Presario Notebook 1200-XL118. I am running Win98. The cdrw worked great and then it stopped running. I reformated and now the system recognizes the cd-writer as an 'Unkown Device' (with a yellow question mark, sometimes a red 'x') under USB Universal Bus Controller and it is not listed under the CDROM icon. I made sure that USB port was enabled in the BIOS. Also, there is no listing 'HP USB Port Driver' under Device Manager either.

I have uninstalled all software and drivers and reinstalled but to no avail. I have tried new cables, but also no effect.

I have tried to update the drivers but the system keeps saying the original one is the best one to use. Anyone have any ideas? Do these things just go bad? This one was a replacement for one that did the same thing, andnow after just 1 1/2 yrs this one no longer works????? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Maddie
