32-bit PCI Card Doesn't work in Proliant DL320 G2

I have a current system running in an HP mini-tower that I wanted to convert to a rack-mounted server. The system is running the Adaptec 1200A PCI ATA RAID controller. When I placed this controller in the PCI slot of the DL320 G2, the system refused to power up. So I turned the card around and placed it the other way (thinking maybe I had it upside down for the 64-bit slot) and the power LED just kept blinking (and would not power up.)

No damage done, the card is back in the mini-tower for now running fine and the Proliant is no worse for the wear. But how do I get this card to run in the machine? The card is 32-bit "PCI 2.2 or previous version compliant." Will this not work in this system? Is there a different PCI riser card available I could use? A different server model? All suggestions welcome (except, unfortunately, using a different controller because I'm trying to do a "brain transplant"...) THANKS!

I think you can not use this card in this machine. The Adaptec card uses 5V pci for as far as i know. The Dl320G2 only supports 3.3 V pci cards.

Thanks for the response! I spent the morning looking at the difference between older 5V and newer 3.3V PCI cards... I'm just confused now by all the various names they go by!

So perhaps I need to ask a new / revised question. What rackmountable server models support an older 5V PCI card? I'm looking for ideally an entry-level option or basically the least expensive option. (Something like the DL380 G3 would work, but are probably overkill in both hardware and cost.) Any older models that can still be obtained? Or any relatively inexpensive newer models that will do the job? Thanks!

Hi,

You can use basically any older system with 32 bit slot in it i think. But always look at the specifications of machines first before buying something. The DL380R3 will not support your card either...

Are there any riser cards that will do the conversion from 3.3V to 5V? From what I've read, even 3.3V-only cards have 5V of power in them - is it possible that a riser card would work instead of an old system. If not, could you please make a recommendation of what system: every system I've looked at that's available for sale through HP has 3.3V only...
