Adding Drive Cages to ML350p Gen 8

I have a Proliant ML350p Gen 8 server with a P420i Smart Array controller and currently only use one drive bay (cage).

I'd like to add the two unused drive bays and add storage capacity.  I've looked at the HDD Expander Cage Kit (Part # 661717-B21).  Does anyone know what all comes with this kit and will just one be sufficient to add the two additional drive cages to my controller?

Hi,

Refer to HP ProLiant ML350p Generation 8 (Gen8) QuickSpecs.

You can check the Part Surfer to see what the kit includes:

Re: Adding Drive Cages to ML350p Gen 8

ML350p Gen8 can accomodate maximum 18 LFF (Large Form Factor)or 24 SFF (Small Forma Factor) hard drives.

Standard configuration has 6 LFF or 8 SFF drive bays. To increase capacity optional drive cages are needed.

Each optional cage adds 6LFF or 8 SFF drive bays.

You may add a total of 2 optional drive cages to get to maximum 18 LFF or 24 SFF hard drive bays.

If you choose to use single a smart array controller for all three cages then you need to choose the Expander Hard Drive Cage Kit.

Else if you choose the Hot Plug Drive Cage Kit then you need to add an additional controller per kit.

Specific to your query:

Assuming that you wish for 18 LFF drive bays running with single existing controller you will need 2 X HP 5U 6 LFF Expander Hard Drive Cage Kit (661717-B21)

This Kit contains the following:

.Mini-SAS cable - 36-position straight connector to straight connector, 648mm (25.5 inches) long

.Miscellaneous cable kit - Includes Mini-SAS to Mini-SAS cable 324mm (12.75 inches) long, hard drive backplane power cable, and graphics card power cable (2x4)

.6-bay large form factor (LFF) hard drive backplane board with SAS expander - Allows up to 18 LFF drives to be managed under one single controller

.Hard drive blank (cover) - To fill empty large form factor (LFF) drive bays
