Advice on Used HP ML350 Gen10 Server Purchase

Hello HPE Community,

I recently came across a deal that seemed really good, and I'd like to seek your insights and opinions on it.

I purchased a used HP ML350 Gen10 server with a 3106 Bronze 1.7GHz processor online.

My quesions:

Condition and Functionality: I've performed some initial checks, and the server appears to be in decent physical condition. It powered on without any obvious issues. However, I'd appreciate any guidance on further checks or tests to ensure it's in proper working order.

I'm sincerely looking forward to hearing your thoughts and experiences. Your input will be invaluable in ensuring I've made a wise investment and in understanding why this server was priced the way it was.

Thank you all for your time and expertise!

Re: Advice on Used HP ML350 Gen10 Server Purchase

@mlodgesa

Good day!

Purchasing a used server, especially at a significantly reduced price, can be a great way to get the hardware you need for various purposes.

However, there are several factors to consider, and I'll try to address your questions and concerns one by one:

>> While it's not common to find a Gen10 server at this price point in 2023, there can be several reasons for the low price:

1. The server might be older or have been used extensively in a data center, making it less valuable.
2. It could be missing warranties.
3. The seller might not have a need for it anymore and is trying to get rid of it quickly.

>> You've taken the right first steps by checking its physical condition and ensuring it powers on.

To further test its functionality, you should:

1. Access the server's BIOS and check for any error messages or hardware issues.
2. Run diagnostic tests, if available, to check for memory, storage, and CPU health.
3. Test all ports, interfaces, and expansion slots to make sure they work.
4. Check for any unusual noises or overheating during operation.
5. If possible, ask the seller for any historical information about the server's usage and maintenance.

>> When buying used servers, common concerns include:

1. Lack of warranty or support, especially if the server is out of warranty.
2. Compatibility issues with newer hardware or software.
3. Hidden issues or wear and tear on components that may not be immediately visible.
4. It's crucial to carefully inspect the server and, if possible, get a warranty or return policy from the seller.

>> Given the low purchase price, budgeting for upgrades and maintenance is a good idea. Consider:

1. Adding more RAM and storage as needed to meet your specific requirements.
2. Replacing or upgrading any aging or failing components, such as hard drives or power supplies.
3. Regularly servicing and cleaning the server to ensure longevity.
4. Checking for firmware and driver updates to ensure compatibility with your intended use.

>> Servers sold at significantly reduced prices may not come with a warranty or support contract.

1. Check with the seller if there's any existing support contract that can be transferred to your name. Be prepared to pay for this transfer, if applicable.
2. Consider contacting HPE support team to inquire about the server's warranty status and available support options.

In summary, while your purchase seems like a good deal, you should be cautious and thorough in evaluating the server's condition and potential hidden issues. Budget for possible upgrades and maintenance, and check for any available warranty or support options. Additionally, consider the server's compatibility with your specific use case to ensure it meets your needs.

These are my opinions so use it at your own risk.
