amsd will not run on proliant dl385 gen 10 plus

I have a group of proliant dl385 Gen 10 plus servers which will not run amsd.

OS: RHEL 8.8

Bios: A42 v2.72

iLO: 2.91

CPU: AMD EPYC 7F52 16-Core Processor

amsd: 3.3.9-1773.23.rhel8

Systemd status just tells me it failed to start.

When run from the cmd line I get this:

# amsd -L
This program requires the host to have a HP Integrated Lights Out 4/5 (iLO 4 or iLO 5) BMC

There seems to be some communication not happening to tell amsd that this is an iLO 5.

smad is running fine.

I've tried earlier versions of amsd back to 1.4.1 with the same results. I have another set of DL385 Gen 10 plus systems with the same OS on which amsd is running fine.

I have searched for similar issues with no success and looked at this off and on for months with no success.

Any idea what might be going on and how to fix it?

Thanks

Re: amsd will not run on proliant dl385 gen 10 plus

Hello,

AMS requires the iLO CHIF driver in order to talk with the iLO. As a general rule, most Linux distro's have the CHIF driver included. Is it possible that this driver is not running on these servers?

@thutchings

Doesn't seem to be the problem as I get a successful response from a restful inquiry

# ilorest get Model --selector Manager.
iLOrest : RESTful Interface Tool version 4.3.0.0
Copyright (c) 2014-2023 Hewlett Packard Enterprise Development LP
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Discovering data...Done
Model=iLO 5

Immediately after get the same response with amsd

amsd -L
This program requires the host to have a HP Integrated Lights Out 4/5 (iLO 4 or iLO 5) BMC

This is what I get with lsmod

# lsmod|grep hpilo
hpilo 20480 0

Hello,

Can you log into the iLO across the network and verify it is working normally? You can also get into the iLO on most DL model servers by going through the service port on the front. I would also see if selecting to factory resetting the iLO has an impact on getting it to respond correctly to queries.

@thutchings

I can log in to the iLO gui from 2 different systems on different networks.

Reset the iLO to defaults and power cycled the system and I'm seeing no difference in behaviour.

I had previously installed a fresh image of RHEL 8 on this system.

I have 8 systems having this problem. All set up the same way.

@campk

Good day!

The error message indicates that the program requires an iLO 4 or iLO 5 BMC, which suggests that the communication between amsd and the BMC might not be working correctly. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can consider:

>> Make sure that the iLO firmware version you have (2.91) is compatible with the amsd version you're using. There might be compatibility requirements that need to be met for amsd to work correctly.

>> Verify that the iLO configuration on the affected servers is set up correctly. Make sure that iLO is enabled, and the necessary settings are properly configured.

>> Check if there are newer versions of firmware available for the server's BIOS and iLO. Sometimes, firmware updates can resolve compatibility issues.

>> Verify that there are no network or communication issues between the server's operating system and the iLO BMC. Check network settings, firewall rules, and any potential network configuration issues that might affect communication.

>> Examine system logs, especially the logs related to amsd and iLO. Look for any error messages, warnings, or clues that might help pinpoint the issue. The logs might provide more specific information about why amsd is failing to detect the iLO version correctly.

>> Since you mentioned that amsd is working fine on another set of DL385 Gen 10 Plus systems with the same OS, try to compare the configurations between the working and non-working systems. Look for any differences in BIOS settings, iLO configurations, installed software, and hardware configurations.

>> Sometimes, software installations can go wrong. You might consider uninstalling amsd completely, then reinstalling the latest version that you have verified as compatible with your hardware and OS.

>> If you have the technical expertise, you might explore debugging options. Analyze the source code of amsd (if available) and see where the communication with the iLO BMC is breaking down.

>> If you've tried all the above steps and still can't resolve the issue, consider reaching out to HPE support.

I hope this helps! Let me know...
