Array Configuration Utility on Hyper-V Server R2

Hello,

I am trying to install the Array Configuration Utility on Hyper-V Server R2, but having problems.

I cannot get the configuration utility to run.
I have tried it in remote service mode, but that doesnt work.

Does the ACU work on Hyper-V Server R2?
If so, how can I get it to work?

hi,

did you try to install the ACU before the hyper-v role was added ???

check this docu :

"Implementing Microsoft├В┬о Windows Server├В┬о 2008 R2 on HP ProLiant servers"

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c01639594/c01639594.pdf

here is also a advisory for the proliants and Windows 2008 R2 + hyper-v.

Re: Array Configuration Utility on Hyper-V Server R2

This isnt Microsoft Server 2008.
This is Microsoft Hyper-V server R2.

Microsoft Hyper-V server is a cut-down version of Server 2008 core.

I need to know if the ACU works specifically with Microsoft Hyper-V server R2?

Has HP tested this?

Re: Array Configuration Utility on Hyper-V Server R2

Did you ever get this working? I have a DL380 G6 that I intended to install Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 on this coming week. I just got it in the rack (haven't even powered it on), but it will be strictly for testing, so I wanted to throw a lot of virtual servers on it. Even though mine is just a test server, I'm not comfortable putting a lot of time into it if I can't use ACU.

Sorry to get off topic, but do you know if Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 supports remote monitoring (Insight Manager) as well?

Re: Array Configuration Utility on Hyper-V Server R2

No, I still havent got this working. I've tried most things, to no avail.

I'm still waiting on a response from HP as to whether this works.
I'd have thought that such a major product as "Microsoft Hyper-V server" would have been thoroughly tested by HP, but the lack of an answer on this suggests otherwise.

I havent tried Insight Manager.

Re: Array Configuration Utility on Hyper-V Server R2

Install HP ProLiant ACU (not CLI),
start "C:\Program Files (x86)\Compaq\Cpqacuxe\Bin\setup.exe"

select Remote Service mode and then

browse from your computer to
https://IPAddress:2381/ACU-XE/ACU.htm

You can also install all others System Management software for R2.

Re: Array Configuration Utility on Hyper-V Server R2

I've tried this already.
I start Remote Service mode - which incidentally claims it will run on port 2301, rather than 2381.
Open a browser on my local PC and navigate to address....nothing.
I have even performed a port scan against the server to see if 2301 or 2381 are open. They are not. I even did a port scan from 1-65535. No ports open except that standard ones you'd expect.
I know its not a firewall issue because I have turned that off.

Can you confirm your instructions work for Hyper-V Server R2? ie- not server core.

Re: Array Configuration Utility on Hyper-V Server R2

I've just got off the phone from HP about this matter.

The helpful gent supplied me a URL that lists all of the supported Microsoft Products on Proliant Servers
http://h71028.www7.hp.com/enterprise/us/en/servers/ws-servers-2008-r2.html
As you can see, Microsoft Hyper-V Server doesnt even get a mention.
http://www.microsoft.com/hyper-v-server/en/us/default.aspx
Clearly HP have tested Server 2008, but Server 2008 is not Hyper-V server.
My suspicions are that Hyper-V is so cut down that it is missing some vital component to allow the ACU to run.

I'll buy Dell....I know their Array Configuration Utility works on Hyper-V Server.

Re: Array Configuration Utility on Hyper-V Server R2

I haven't even had a chance to power my server up yet. I hope to get to this today, and I will let you know if I figure anything out. Considering that I am planning to install Hyper-V Server on a DL380 G6, and the G6 was designed specifically with virtualization in mind, I'd say someone really dropped the ball if this doesn't work.

Re: Array Configuration Utility on Hyper-V Server R2

I have been able to access the ACU from within the system managemnet homepage from full GUI windows system, you have to enable remote management mode first and then access the SMH(https://hostname or IP:2381 login and then you should be able to access the ACU i just tested this with Hyper-v Server 2008 R2. and it worked just fine. as a standard i usually enable the remote service mode for the ACU when i build a Core box so doing it on a Hyper v server is the same. the correct path is C:\Program Files (x86)\Compaq\Cpqacuxe\bin\ run file cpqacuxe and then choose remote services mode

Re: Array Configuration Utility on Hyper-V Server R2

On my hyper-v server ACU works ok.

I found problem with hyper-v only in sending e-mail alerts, when events ocuour, because core server dosn't have mapi for sending mail (there is no IE). I suspect that HP Wbem Dump warning in eventlog is also because hyper-v server.

Another strange problem is that NC382i network card is not displayed in SMH home page.

Re: Array Configuration Utility on Hyper-V Server R2

The issue being discussed is not running 2008 Server Core with the Hyper-V role installed, but running Hyper-V Server 2008. These are two very different products.

Re: Array Configuration Utility on Hyper-V Server R2

Jeremy,

I just wanted to say thanks for your post. I could not get the ACU to work remotely now matter what I did, but once I installed the System Management Homepage I could get to that remotely, and the link inside that got me to ACU.

HP may or may not support it, but the ACU web interface DOES WORK remotely on Hyper-V Server 2008 R2.

Re: Array Configuration Utility on Hyper-V Server R2

ACU works fine , even remotely , on hyper-v .
Just check to have opened the firewall port 2381 and 2301 with the following commands

netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="HP SHM" dir=in protocol=TCP localport=2381 action=allow

netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="HP SHM" dir=in protocol=TCP localport=2301 action=allow

Then after installing the ACU and configured for remote service you should be able to connect remotely

Re: Array Configuration Utility on Hyper-V Server R2

you have to enable ports, check previous post.
if this is not working and you need to change something quick boot from smart start and change what you need using the offline ACU.

Re: Array Configuration Utility on Hyper-V Server R2

I am also unable to get this to work on a ML350G6. Used the SmartStart CD to install Hyper-V Server. The utilities auto-installed on first boot. I enabled ACU Remote Service Mode and opened the firewall ports. I can access the System Management Homepage perfectly. Every link on the SMH works perfectly. But clicking on the ACU link tells me:

The current security settings on your server prevent you from accessing the Array Configuration Utility (ACU) remotely. To run ACU on this server, you must access it at http://127.0.0.1:2301 from a browser running on the local server.

HP tech support has run me through checking every option, but it's still not working for me. They are researching the issue and they say they're going to get back to me, but I haven't heard from them yet. If anyone has any other suggestions, I'd be grateful for the assistance.

Re: Array Configuration Utility on Hyper-V Server R2

RDP into the Hyper-V Server (or do this from the console), and run "C:\Program Files (x86)\Compaq\Cpqacuxe\Bin\setup.exe" Select Remote Service mode, and you should be able to access it remotely afterwards.

Re: Array Configuration Utility on Hyper-V Server R2

How did you install the HP Management tools on a Windows Server 2008 R2 Core server, I cant seem to find the installation and installation guide.

Re: Array Configuration Utility on Hyper-V Server R2

Thanks to Jeromey and Stefano for the guidance. On my Hyper-C server 2008 I have:
1) Setup remote management
2) Installed both system management console and array configuration utility.
3) Created firewall rules to open inbound access to ports 2301 and 2381.
However when I browse to
http://server:2301
https://server:2381
or
https://server:2381/ACU-XE/ACU.htm
I get "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". Even more annoying now that I know it should work!

When I check the server, I can see that the Array Configuration Utility service is running and that my rules are in the firewall. Any ideas what could be wrong?

Re: Array Configuration Utility on Hyper-V Server R2

Alan,

Did you see my last reply on 7/28 regarding "C:\Program Files (x86)\Compaq\Cpqacuxe\Bin\setup.exe"? I could not access the links either, until I ran that from the console and selected Remote Service Mode.

Yes, I tried both cpqacuxe.exe and when that did not work I read on further, saw your addition and tried setup.exe, but no luck so far!

Re: Array Configuration Utility on Hyper-V Server R2

When you say you ran setup and it did not work, do you mean that the setup application itself failed to launch, or you did not get the results expected? Setup.exe should just open a window with two radio buttons, asking whether you want to run ACU in local or remote mode. Selecting remote service mode will just make the machine listen on port 2301.

If you have System Management Homepage and Array Configuration Utility installed, then type the following at a command prompt:
tasklist /FI "IMAGENAME eq hpsmhd.exe"

You should have the same executable display twice in the results pane with separate PIDs. You can also use the following command to see if the executables are listening and on what ports:
netstat -a -b

This is what you should see:
TCP 0.0.0.0:2301 :0 LISTENING
[hpsmhd.exe]
TCP 0.0.0.0:2381 :0 LISTENING
[hpsmhd.exe]

Then to confirm you have the ports open in the Windows Firewall:
netsh firewall add portopening TCP 2301 HP_ACU enable subnet
netsh firewall add portopening TCP 2381 HP_SMH enable subnet

These will open ports 2301 and 2381 and accept connections from any machine within the same subnet.

Re: Array Configuration Utility on Hyper-V Server R2

Sorry, I was not specific in my last response. When I ram setup.exe I did get the window which allowed me to select "Remote Mode" and did so, but nothing thereafter indicating either sucess or failure, but when I attempt to browse to port 2301 (or 2381 via https), I simply get a "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage".

When I run "tasklist /FI "IMAGENAME eq hpsmhd.exe", I get the message "INFO: No tasks are running which match the specified criteria.", and when I look at tasklist, there are no hpsmhd.exe processes running.

netstat -a -b shows nothing listening on ports 2301 or 2381.

Any advice?
Alan

Re: Array Configuration Utility on Hyper-V Server R2

If yuo read my earlier posts closely, you will see I had the same problem until I installed the HP System Management Homepage. I installed ACU, configured the firewall port exceptions, and set ACU to run in remote service mode, but I could not get it to work. When I went back and installed the HP System Management Homepage, I was able to login to that remotely, and there is a link inside it to open ACU in a new window, and that worked fine.

I never did get any response from HP on whether this was supported, but I would focus on making the HP System Management Homepage work first, then ACU will likely work (not standalone, just the links inside SMH). Does that make sense?
