Backup slow

HP Utlrium 230 ext, with Adaptec 29160 SCSI adapter(dedicated), Smartarray controller 5302 (std), Dual processor, 512MB Ram, Win 2000.
Using Performance assessment tool, I should get 15 m/sec but only acheive 3.9 m/sec.
All Onboard SCSI controllers disabled. Both HP & Adaptec suggest the bottleneck is with Compaq, another drive tried, SCSI adatpter and tape drive tried on a ML 370, with the same Array controller and PAT results were the same.

Re: Backup slow

I have a ML530 1ghz xeon 1gb Ram and am using a 29160 card with an ADIC Fastor tape library and getting the same problem. My write to backup is half of what it should be. I am running the same backup (Fastor quantum 8000) device on a ML370 BUT using the onboard SCSI 2 controller and getting double the speed of my 530.

Re: Backup slow

I also have a 530 and a 370 and using a quantum 8000 backup device was not seeing the speed I should. What ended up solving the problem is using the onboard SCSI-2 for both servers. Once I got away from using the SCSI card my backups speeds improved dramatically. I was at 163mb per min on fully compressed files and now I am getting 450mb per min. Do yourself a favor and go out and get the cable to run from your internal SCSI and put the 29160 card in something else. I still don't know why the Host adapters do not give the speed they should but my backups just went from 15hrs to 7 for the cost of a $60 cable.
