Cloning server

Cloning server

I currently have a custom built server that is running 4.11 and used SFTIII. I would like to clone it to a new 1600R and use mirroring. Does anyone have a suggestion on what I should use? I currently have both PowerQuest's ServerMagic for NetWare 4.0 and also Symantec's Ghost for NetWare. I would appreciate any help or suggestions.

Re: Cloning server

To clone any OS install to another system, the hardware and OS driver configuration used on the other system must be identical in every way. The processor and memory configuration. The video and network controller that is used in the system. And the hard drive configuation that is in the system, down to the OS partition types and sizes. If there are any differences in the hardware configuration or BIOS settings, the cloned OS will not run correctly on the other system. You must do a fresh install of the OS so that the correct drivers and OS kernel support files are built by the OS install process.

Re: Cloning server

By mirroring I assume you mean "Server Mirroring". If this is the case, both servers MUST be identical. If you want to clone a server to use Drive Mirroring, the ServerMagic product is a better product than Ghost.

Re: Cloning server

You might also look at Novell's Across the wire Migration utility. It has worked great for me. One of my favorite features is the fact that you can easily go back to your old server if you have any problems.
